1998 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 AWD

Summary:

Nice and luxurious

Faults:

Nothing really..

- Changed battery cables for the hell of it.

- Put in a new radio, because the factory stopped working right.

General Comments:

I love it!!! The 5.0 liter V8 AWD engine is a beast! Comes in handy during winter, and for towing trailers.

The interior... is so nice compared to any vehicle I've ever owned in my life; leather seats and all the power options.

I've put 10k miles on it so far, and it hasn't missed a beat since I've had it. And I love the sound system!

1998 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 V8

Summary:

This thing is 100% perfect! Wouldn't trade it for the world!

Faults:

A/C switch had to be replaced, and had small oil leak.

General Comments:

Like I said, I had to replace the A/C switch and had a slight oil leak, but other than that the SUV is perfect in every way. I'm lucky my husband is a mechanic, so it really hasn't been expensive at all.

The 2 things that had gone wrong with it weren't a real big deal, and the tires did have to be replaced when I first got it (3 years ago), but it's got about 300-thousand miles on it so what could you expect? It's got that many miles on it and it's still running strong.

This is my 4th vehicle and it's been a dream. I've had a Chevy Blazer and two Chevy Cavaliers, and none of them come even close to this one; it's got all the speed, power, and durability I need. I change the oil when I should and I don't have any problems.

If for some reason something happened to this one, I would get another one, same year and everything! It's still made out of steel instead of plastic and I have backed into my husband's '95 F150 several times, and there's not a dent or scratch on it. I feel 100% safe in it, and I can drive my children, me, the dogs, whatever, and not feel nervous about if someone hit me, would I have an engine in my lap. This thing is all around perfect!

1998 Mercury Mountaineer Loaded 5.0 V8

Summary:

The first and best sport utility I have ever owned!

Faults:

At this point nothing has gone wrong except the driver lumber leaks. I paid $5.993 for it from a very-reputable dealership. It has been very well maintained (one-owner). The only thing I do not enjoy is the feedback from the all terrain - all season tires. I get a small vibration from the floor up through the gas pedal at certain highway speeds.

General Comments:

The truck drives straight and handles like a dream. Here is what’s weird. It does not suck gas! V8 AWD-what? I can go all day in the city with little highway driving on only $10 dollars of gas = 140 miles.

1998 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0L

Summary:

This is classy SUV that lacks the refinement it deserves

Faults:

Back wiper motor quit and replaced twice (Still broke).

Radio Display fades in and out.

Belt tensioner went out at around 90K.

Both front seat levers broke off.

Center console material cracked and tore up.

Door handle spring broke on front driver door and rear right passenger door.

Heat and A/C Plenum door broke at 100K.

Recall on timing tensioner chain.

Firestone tire recall.

General Comments:

The mercury mountaineer is a stylish looking SUV.

The engineers at Ford didn't necessarrily do a good job on estimating the life cyle or mean time between failures on some of its components. Other than these few annoyances, I have enjoyed the vehicle, but have been a bit disappointed on the durability of many of the parts on this vehicle.

I must commend the service department at my Local Lincoln Mercury dealer. They do a great job and are very friendly and knowledgeable when I have problems concerning this vehicle.

I think the 4.0L engine has been very reliable, but does lack a lot of power. The vehicle does tend to creak and rattle more than any of my previous vehicles.

I would buy another mountaineer if I was in the market for that particular type of vehicle, but not without first looking at other comparable vehicles.

My 97 mountaineer rattles, too. Everything else seems to be great, but do you know what causes the rattling? Is it something I should get checked out?
