2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Summary:

Buyer beware. Looks are deceiving.

Faults:

I got this car last June (07) and it has been an absolute nightmare. It seems I am always sinking money into it. It looks rich, but it also requires you to be rich to keep it running because it's one thing after another. I do not have the time to list everything right now, but buyer beware on this piece of junk. I am already looking to trade it in and am going to lose money, but it's going on 90,000 and I hate to see what may happen to it after 100,000. Also, the seats are really uncomfortable on long drives. I drive a lot and have developed an achey back which I never had before.

I am not a complainer at all, so for me to say all of this is a big deal. I try very hard to look at the positive aspect of life, but positive things on this vehicle are really hard to find.Hmmm... I love my sunroof! :o)

2002 Mercury Mountaineer 6 cylinder

Summary:

Very expensive to maintain

Faults:

Transmission went out 58,000.

Driver side wheel bearing out 49,000.

Passenger side wheel bearing out 62,000.

General Comments:

This vehicle has been nothing but trouble.

Paint chips easily off of the roof rack.

Only pulled a light utility trailer a few times... vehicle has towing package and transmission goes out. Used transmission cost $2,500.

Wheel bearings wear out at a cost of $300.00 each.

This SUV rides very nice, but be prepared to spend large $$$$ for upkeep. Never buy a Mercury again!! I now see why all my buddies bought Toyota.

2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Faults:

As many have noted, we have had major transmission problems along with bearings, and what seems to be an overall suspension issue.

We did replace the shift solenoid at a cost of $600, and three weeks later had to put in a whole new transmission at a cost of $1800. The solenoid replacement did nothing for us.

We also had to do both wheel bearings, a coil spring and we still need an axle shaft replaced ($700).

There is something wrong with these transmissions, with all of us having the same shimmy problems and then needing the replacement transmission.

Ford, what are you going to do for these 2002's? We have spent nearly $4000 on repairs for a used vehicle we bought for just under $10,000. That is a crime.

I agree. Ford, what are you doing for everyone that purchased a 2002 Mountaineer? Mine only has 50,000 miles on it. I really can't afford to fix it, I needed a safe reliable SUV for my kids and me. I had a '96 Explorer for many years, and no problems with it. I decided I should get a newer vehicle, but now I'm regretting it. Not sure what I'm going to do. I need a vehicle!

2002 Mercury Mountaineer V8

Summary:

Not reliable at all!

Faults:

My 02 Mountaineer would not start unless I cranked the key 3 times.

My 02 Mountaineer would hesitate, act like it had the hiccups, then it would lag behind when pressing the gas, and jerk when it caught up, when accelerating from stop to 40 mph.

Took Mountaineer in and they said it was the fuel pressure valve and the idle air control valve. $600 later the problem still existed when I took it home and brought it back in, and they said it was probably the torque convertor. Don't know how much that will cost! Only owned the car for 30 days! Only 50k.

General Comments:

I owned a Jag and Toyota before this car; they both lasted over 200,000 miles. The Mountaineer I bought has had more problems in the first 30 days of owning it than any other car I've owned!

This 02 Mountaineer is a nightmare. I bought it because someone totalled my old vehicle. My hubby was in Iraq when I bought it, and he already has enough stress, and now he has to hear that his wife has been without a vehicle, because it keeps going back into the shop. I'm pregnant and I have a 4 year old, and we have to ask neighbors if we can go to the grocery store with them, because I have no ride. No family out here, as the military has moved us kind of far away.
