1995 Mercury Mystique GS 4 cylinder

Summary:

High maintenance $$$

Faults:

Alternator needed replacing as well as battery.

Cup holders were history when I got the car.

Front rotors, pads replaced as well as wheel cylinders on rear, transmission slips, and I cannot get it to idle on its own.

Oxygen sensor replaced as well as complete exhaust system front to back.

Trunk leaks.

I'm paralyzed and living on a very small income. This car keeps me broke. It's too bad better design wasn't used when they built this car, because it's a nice riding vehicle, but I cannot afford the repairs.

I also deal with my "battery of mechanics who refer to my car as a 95 Mercury Mistake".

What we need is an automaker to return to rear wheel drive, get rid of the computer and the numerous troublesome and expensive sensors (oxygen sensor $150). Forget about replacing the transmission filter (8 hours labour $$); the transmission slips out of gear all the time.

This car should be called a Mercury Expense!

General Comments:

Can anyone please tell me how to get the car to idle properly, instead of it racing up high, then stalling?

Since the Mystique is mechanically the same as the Contour and the Mondeo, you can check with the Contour posts at Carsurvey.org and here:

Good luck.

1995 Mercury Mystique GS 2.5

Summary:

It's real cool and fun

Faults:

Check engine light on because of coil pack.

Popping noise in the rear because of sway bar links.

General Comments:

I love the car; even with the problems.

This is the second Mystique I have owned; they're fast, fun and it's a one of a kind car.

All cars have problems; you just have to do the research. It's not the cars fault from what I've read, it's the people working on them.

The transmission is the only thing that I think that could be costly, no matter how much you look around, and as far as far as the doors sticking, people should know all cars need lubed; that's a given.

Check the contour enthusiast group (CEG). They described how to get rid of the popping at the sway bar.

1995 Mercury Mystique GS 2.0

Summary:

I like it, but hate to hear about the problems occuring

Faults:

I am having problems with my RPM jumping up and down, loss of power, fans not blowing properly, possible transmission or battery problems.

The usual minor problems have occurred.. no cigarette lighter, power windows slow, headrest loose, squeaky doors (may I suggest 10w40), loud engine noises, shake & vibration when at idle, found out that I need new engine coolant fan.

I suggest all owners go to www.autobytel.com and check on all safety recalls. Have your local dealership call Ford for updates on recalls, and have them all done ASAP!!! Recalls can be checked out through your vehicle's VIN.

All recalls not completed can cause faulty wiring, which can lead to fires or accidents, and injuries if collisions occur.

General Comments:

It is however very economical and good on gasoline.

I really like it overall.

1995 Mercury Mystique GS 2.5L 24v V6

Summary:

The car is as good as you want it to be

Faults:

When Purchased Clock Did not work.

Nor did the power locks.

Licence plate lights.

Reverse lights.

The exhaust system had several failed gaskets.

The brake lines were rusted out.

The speedometer cable was broken.

General Comments:

After I fixed all of these problems the car ran great.

I have heard many direct complaints about the cars reliability; however most of the repairs I performed are general necessary automotive repairs.

The car is a very good overall vehicle that can be appreciated by a large demographic of car owners.

1995 Mercury Mystique GS 2.0L 4 cylinder.

Summary:

Great little car for little money!

Faults:

I bought the car for $200 so of course their will be problems. However, not as many as I thought.

#1 2 front brake lines (rust out on any car)

#2 exhaust work, lots of it. Replaced all new from motor to tail pipe (incl. cat., resonator, and muffler)

#3 It has recently split a CV boot which will be changed soon.

#4 It also needs a Ball joint too.

We bought it with the the rear power windows not working, cruise not working and the A/C not working. Other than that though it's been a great little car.

General Comments:

It's pretty comfortable considering it's size. My fiancee loves driving it mind you she likes most smaller cars. I'm not sure exactly what option package came with our car, but it's a GS model, but has power windows, locks, mirrors, cruise, tilt, spoiler, power antenna and upgraded sound system; no ABS or traction control, leather, alloys or sunroof. It's amazing on gas as well.

It's a great little car and I would recommend it. I have heard of problems with these cars, but none of come up with my car. It's also an odd colour combo of white exterior and burgundy cloth interior. Oh well, still a great little car!
