1991 Mercury Sable Wagon 6 cylinder

Summary:

Make Sure All The Parts Are There

Faults:

The car had been built with some kind of odd theft prevention device. There was a button beneath the dash you had to press in order to start it. By the 93K mark, that stopped responding and I had to pay a garage to disconnect it.

At 8 years old, the paint was in very sad shape. The hood was barren of any gloss and it looked like it was 5 years older than it was. The door handles all were tricky and it wasn't easy to just hop in... you had to wait and see if the automatic locks would unlock all the doors.

At 109,000 the transmission gave out because the dealership neglected to put a dipstick inside it. So, the fluid simply evaporated out. I left it on a side street praying it would get towed away and it did and I never heard from it again.

General Comments:

The ride was unusually noisy, like the engine was trying to revolt. I couldn't figure what the issue was, but it didn't sound like a engine in good condition. There was a continual whistling sound coming from the motor, as well as it's accompanying rumble whenever you pressed the gas.

It was a solid car while it ran and I liked having it around. It wasn't a showpiece, but it was nothing to be embarrassed of. I wish it had lasted longer because we didn't get that much use out of it. But, I couldn't justify replacing the transmission in it. I was very disappointed in the used car lot that sold it to me with the missing dipstick. THAT was really a bad move on their part and bad on mine cause I never checked for it's existence. So, the fault was equal. It was just a waste of my money.

Overall, if you have a functioning one, it's got a good sense of power and is roomy is can be. That six cylinder engine has a good amount of b*lls and can beat a lot of people at traffic lights... which will surprise people cause you're in a dainty station wagon.

1991 Mercury Sable GS 3.0 V6

Summary:

King of the Road

Faults:

This white and black 1991 Mercury Sable should have been dead years ago. This car is owned by a very close friend of our family, and I take car of some of its up keep. The car does suffer from very bad rust on the bottom of the doors, and rear fender area. The interior is cheap, and things like the a/c vents that droop, the tachometer that stopped working, and the little bits and pieces that are messed up, it has held up well.

The outside had trim that looks like its two years older then dirt, more rust then the Titanic, and body parts that just don't fit right, its OK.

General Comments:

This car is the all American cruiser. Then engine starts with a quick, and a jump. The parking brake makes a large noise when it is let go. Even with just over 235,000 miles on the original engine and transmission, this car goes down the highway at 80 mph, and driving like a highway chief.

At 75 mph, with 5 people in the car, the engine stays quiet and has plenty of power. The a/c, power windows, power locks, cassette, and all options still work too.

All this car has ever needed was its 4 coats of wax a year, and clean oil.

1991 Mercury Sable LS 3.8L V6

Summary:

Excellent Mid-Size Car

Faults:

I have not had that many problems with the car. First, the head gasket blew at around 92,000 miles. Second, the power steering line blew very recently. Other than that, only routine maintenance has been done like brake pads, tires, and spark plug wires.

General Comments:

I love this car and decided to keep it when I bought my new Chevrolet Impala over the summer. The car is extremely reliable. The engine is quite powerful, which drivers of sports cars fail to realize. The first thing I did when I bought the car was to change the stereo. Ford seems to only install the worst radios.

My dealer's comment on replacing the head gasket for the second time in under 70000 miles was don't worry about replacing the head gasket again, the transmission will fail before that. This is junk. Ford would not even discuss the head gasket problem.

If you have maintained the vehicle and experience a blown head gasket, something serious is generally wrong with the design of the engine. That is the reason Ford recalled the '94 and later models of this same hunk of junk. The '93 3.8 liter v6 is the same engine, but would they help repair that puppy? Not on your life. If you really like your Sable, I have one you can have for not much.
