2001 Mercury Sable LS Premier

Summary:

One of the most reliable cars I've owned

Faults:

Two days after leaving the dealership lot, the wipers stopped working. I thought I might have gotten a bad deal. But this was a recall item, and the dealer fixed it at no cost.

The brake pedal switch and seat belt also had been recall items that the dealers fixed.

Other than that, I have had no mechanical problems at all. I do keep up with regular service.

The door panels on the interior are peeling and coming loose. This is due to the fact that the car gets parked in direct sunlight in dusty parking lots for long periods. I tried using a car cover, but that was stolen.

I did have a vibration for a while, but that was my own fault for purchasing "bargain" tires. I now have good tires and no more vibrations.

I had to spend 68 dollars to find out the gas cap was loose and causing the engine oil light to come on.

General Comments:

I am consistently getting at least 26 mpg. I drive mostly highway between Alabama and Louisiana. Very comfortable ride.

The car shifts smoothly, and the cruise control is great.

Service has been good and bad, depending on the dealership I went to.

I installed a trailer hitch, and use it to haul a cargo trailer from time to time. I've hauled a washer/drier, living room furniture, lawn mower etc. It is a lot cheaper than a truck, and the trailers rent for 15/day.

I did break the tail light unhooking the trailer. Dealers wanted $138 plus labor for a new taillight. I got one at a salvage yard for $15, and it only took a few minutes to change out.

2001 Mercury Sable LS 3.0L 24v V6

Summary:

Bells Lights and Whistles all in one Mercury style box

Faults:

Just a lot of sensors. Your dash board will light up like a Christmas tree during the fourth of July. And the driver's side seat belt won't retract, but other than that its reliable.

General Comments:

Nice features really help when I'm driving. Adjustable pedals, 6 way power seat, cruise control are just overall helpful.

2001 Mercury Sable Twin Cam V6

Summary:

I will not own another vehicle of this brand

Faults:

At 25,000 the rack and pinion steering seals failed. Had to replace the entire unit.

At 28,000 the Early Gas Recurculation valve had to be replaced.

At 47,000 the transmission failed. Had to replace entire unit. Very expensive process.

General Comments:

This car is very comfortable to drive.

However, the comfort is not worth the trouble, and expenses that I have encountered. All these problems at less than 50,000 miles.

The "Early Gas Recurculation valve"? What about the Late one, did that check out OK?

Around 25000 miles the light in the dash went out. I had this fixed in November 2003 and they went out again. I had this fixed in 2004 again and the lights went out again.

The Radio/Cassette unit rattles.

Everytime I change oil the filter leaks and I get the burning smell of oil into the car.

It is so frustrating.

Besides the rack and pinion steering, which is beginning to show wear on my 2001 Sable GS, there have been no other problems with it.

Although Ford needs to re-think their interior design. Take for instance the panel that houses the radio and climate controls... almost $100.00 for a new aftermarket faceplate!? And $60.00 for a new wiring harness that you have to route from the rear unit in the trunk... to the dash, very inconvienent!

Basically all Fords built since 1995 have these flaws... but a good car, nonetheless.

2001 Mercury Sable LS V6

Summary:

Low reliability, good preformance

Faults:

The transmission blew out at 49000... out of warranty. The seat belt had to be replace at 25000. The leather seats are thin and discolored. Electrical problems with the lights at 30000.

General Comments:

The car may have improved in features, but the reliability is poor, to say the least.
