1994 Mercury Villager GS 3.0 V6 non interference

Summary:

Cheap used car, BUT poor engine performance in COLD WEATHER (below freezing)

Faults:

EGR valve reporting trouble codes/causing CEL (EGR SOLENOID CODE).

Erratic idle, especially in colder weather. (IAC VALVE??)

Brakes very stiff in cold weather - must push hard to stop initially.

Bushings replaced - worn.

Sway bar replaced.

Rear brake cylinders/shoes - leaking brake fluid.

Front brake pads - stress fractures found in pads.

Brake lines leak - rusted underneath from climate.

Fuel injectors - erratic idle/poor mileage (15 mpg).

No rear defroster (doesn't work).

No warning chime if keys left in ignition or lights on.

No replacement for parking light halogens at local auto parts stores could be found.

Need special NISSAN CONSULT cable and software to check OBD codes without having to jumper pins under hood, which can be a pain.

General Comments:

Nice ride.

Only shows rust on a few areas.

Comfortable driving position.

Nice for hauling heavy materials.

After removing the second row, the third row can slide all the way up or all the way back for easy storage.

Handles well in the snow/ice.

Transmission pan has a drain plug for "refreshing" oil.

Transmission seems strong on it when shifting.

1994 Mercury Villager GS 6 cylinder

Summary:

A good van but expensive to repair

Faults:

Alternator went at 120K; cost $250.

Front end is tough!!

Both tie rods replaced at 115K.

Front brakes at 128K.

Side door issues, passenger power window switch is bad, exhaust manifold bolts are shot.

General Comments:

Not a bad car since it is a Nissan in disguise... we got it for $2400, so we didn't expect much, it's a decent car for the money, but expensive to repair due to its Nissan bloodlines.

1994 Mercury Villager GS 3.0

Summary:

The Villager is a testimony to unrealized potential

Faults:

Fuel pump at 180,000 km

Many, many electrical faults

Exhaust manifold studs faulty (common & expensive repair)

Water pump at 140,000 km and at 200,000 km

Collapsed lifter at 150,000 km

Rear window shocks replaced 3 times

General Comments:

While this is one of the most comfortable vehicles I have ever owned, and it gets great fuel economy for a van.

It is intolerably unreliable. I have always maintained any vehicle I have owned well, following all manufacturer instructions, but it is to no avail on this vehicle. Many items cannot be faulted as they have simply run their expected service life, but the faulty manifold studs are a big exception. Much about this problem can be found on Internet sites, and the manufacturer has refused to remedy the problem.

Additionally, the vehicle is plagued by electrical faults, and my local mechanic has stated it is a common thing on these vehicles. This is really too bad because the overall design/ergonomics and utility of the vehicle are outstanding.

I should point out that I know 3 other people with this same year vehicle, and they have all had similar experiences with their vehicles.

1994 Mercury Villager LS

Summary:

What an awesome minivan

Faults:

Replaced the timing belt twice.

The front end needs replacing about every 100,000 km including struts, tie rod ends.

Back heater went and no-one could ever seem to fix it.

General Comments:

The van still has all original parts in the motor and transmission.

It still has tons of power.

Very very reliable.

Love the idea of the sliding bench seat, which folds for the extra cargo room.

-GREAT SUBSTITUTE for a PICKUP Truck

-Have carried a many items inside: 4x4 panels, couches, desks, beds, long bookcases, mattresses, furnitures---

-VERY SPACIOUS AND PRACTICAL--especially with the seats being on rails and can easily move forward.

-Even the passenger seats recline forward or backward to allow long cargo to extend to the front passenger area!

-My second row captains chair easily comes off-- adding more space!!

-THIS VAN SAVE ME FROM BUYING A PICKUP TRUCK for an average household use...

-Great view from the driver side..
