1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 2.0 turbo

Summary:

A versatile speed demon!

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with the car per se.

The exterior seems to be cursed.

We had the car for 6 days before it was side swiped.

Once, a deer jumped over the car and clipped one of the retractable headlights.

The hydraulic system that holds the trunk open went out a while back, but we had it fixed.

We had the A/C re-charged in 2000, but it stopped working just one year later.

We stopped driving it regularly around 1995, and mileage has decreased sharply ever since- we want to save this great car!

That being said, the shifter became gummy and we took it in, hoping it wouldn't cost much. Sure enough, $70 and a cleaning later, it was good as new!

Other than that, it has been trouble free.

General Comments:

We have always bought Toyotas, but we took a chance on the Mitsu as it provided comparable performance to a Supra at 3/4 the price. We are NOT disappointed.

This car is quick and nimble.

Put the pedal down and it roars! You'll be thrown back in your seat.

This car is everything that Mustangs and Camaros are supposed to be: affordable, reliable, muscular and FUN. In the last 30 years, the American automakers have made cars that have some, but never all, of these attributes.

Be good to your Eclipse, and it will be good to you: let the turbo cool down before shutting off, change the oil every 3K miles, don't take it out in bad weather, do the 60K maintenance, have the transmission looked at around 80K.

I own an '88 camaro, and let me tell you, it's FUN and MUSCULAR!!.

1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse 1.8

Summary:

My Eclipse is a good little car, well worth the $300 I paid for it

Faults:

In the short period I have had the car - brakes, battery, and the alternator.

It also leaks/burns oil like there is no tomorrow.

The transmission is also a bit weak.

All is expected though for a car this old.

General Comments:

The car is a great little toy to run around with, cheap on gas, but makes up for it in oil.

It's bit tired feeling till you get the tach up there, then she flies.

The only real problem I have had is trying to find parts for it.

1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0 Dual Overhead Cam

Summary:

A high performance bargain

Faults:

My computer failed at 77,200.

General Comments:

This is my second car, and it runs great.

It has beautiful acceleration, for an automatic transmission.

The car handles great, and can out perform most cars on the back-roads in my town.

The cabin is small, but there is enough room for me and a passenger, and that is all I need.

1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0 DOHC N/T

Summary:

A great car for it's price

Faults:

I replaced the alternator when I first acquired the car.

The exhaust cam rotated and I replaced the timing belt to prevent valve problems.

I lost use of 3rd gear and the transmission died altogether.

General Comments:

This is a very reliable car.

The Non-Turbo 2.0 is a strong motor at 145 horsepower reaching 145mph with a good stretch of road.

Handles very nice throughout the corners, but has a mild under-steer problem.

Transmission are very touchy and break easily (automatics and manuals) and are noted for this.

1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse Base 1.8L

Summary:

A reliable, compact, somewhat sporty mode of transportation

Faults:

The water pump went at 138000.

I replaced timing belts at 138000 as a precaution.

It burns oil and smokes, about a quart every 800 miles.

The brakes could use a little work, but driveable.

General Comments:

I bought the car as a senior in high school to replace my aging Buick. It has proved to be very reliable in all sorts of conditions.

My gas mileage for this 1.8L, automatic was upper twenties in the city and mid to upper thirties on the highway. I can get over 400 miles per tank if I drive conservatively.

The engine is a bit sluggish off the line and when cold, but is very quick on the highway for it's size. All of the power is in the top end. (3000-6000rpm)

The car handles well, and the tight suspension hugs the corners with ease. The car is also balanced well. I live in a very snowy, cold climate, and I find it does well in the snow, except that it's so low to the ground. Also, the car has large blind spots because of the thick pillars in the back, so one has to be careful when changing lanes, etc.

The interior is very nice and very futuristic for the time it was made. Comfort is average. The driver sits with his or her feet forward, and I have just enough leg room for my frame. (6'2, 265lbs) I still have a couple inches of headroom to spare. The back seats are pretty much a joke for anyone larger than a 10 year old. The space is better used with the seats folded down. A lot of cargo can be carried this way. This car is pretty much a two seater.

The car has been in the Midwest all of it's life, and there's hardly any rust. The paint has faded in the back a bit, but it's still a beautiful, blue paint job.

The main complaint with this car is the oil consumption. The car smokes if it's been idling without movement, but it's not so bad on long distances. A thicker oil like 10w-40 and oil additives like STP oil treatment help it not to burn so much. It's not that bad, however, as long as one keeps a quart of oil in the car for longer trips.

Besides the water pump, I haven't had to replace anything out of necessity. This is a great car for a single person or a college student. It's reliability is hard to beat, and it still manages to be a bit sporty. Don't think about trying to race any souped up imports, however.
