1990 Mitsubishi Galant 2.0L SOHC gasoline

Summary:

Excellent and very reliable!

Faults:

The transmission is beginning to slip, but otherwise she's a real champion.

General Comments:

I recently had to replace the engine because it threw a rod and cracked the block. It was relatively simple to replace and the old girl is running like a Swiss watch again.

As for power she gets a good amount of get up and go.

The interior is roomy enough for me and I'm about six foot tall.

1990 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cylinder

Summary:

A reliable piece of transportation

Faults:

Had to replace the front CV joints when I first got the car from a used car dealer. Went to Pep Boys so they are under lifetime guarantee.

Had to replace the rear axle for $600 after 1-2 years of owning it.

It has started leaking motor oil in the last two years, but it's not a major problem. Oil is cheap compared to other things.

General Comments:

Car has never let me down.

Good on gas. I commute about 1 hour daily 5x/weekly and I get about 33 miles to the gallon.

I bought the car thinking I'd only need it for 2 years, but it's lasted 5 already.

For a 4-cylinder, it has some pep to it.

I'm 6'2" and fit comfortably in the driver's seat.

1990 Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 gasoline

Faults:

After 126,000 miles, besides normal maintenance, the only thing I found unusually wrong is the water pump has been replaced twice.

General Comments:

After more than eight years and 126,000 miles, I have no intention of getting rid of this car. I have had four cars, purchased new, to last at least 100,000 miles. The Galant is by far the most reliable. The only part about it I don't like is the design of the horn.

I agree. The design of the horn on my 1990 Galant is also poor. You must press heavily with both hands which is obviously dangerous.

Other than that, my soon-to-be eleven year old Galant has more than 187,000 miles. Yes, the water pump needs to be replaced along with the timing belt (every 60,000 miles); but I've had no major surprises. My mechanic tells me I should get at least 250,000 miles.

I am very happy with my '90 Galant. The engine is fine, but only now after 14 years the exhaust needs to be replaced due to rust. I have owned this car for 12 years and I love it.

I recently bought a 1990 Galant with low miles (94k), now it has 97k. A common problem with older Mitsubishis (notably Galant and Diamante models) is the problem with smoke coming from the exhaust and oil leaks from the engine, my car has both these problems. I paid $140 (parts and labor) to have a new valve cover gasket, that made the problem less, but not go away. This car is surprisingly a good drive, handles and accelerates decent (considering it only has 102HP, it does only weight around 2600lbs though). I will write a full review when I put much more miles on the car.
