1987 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 2.0

Summary:

Reliable

Faults:

Not much. Bought it in California and drove it 4000 miles to Massachusetts. Only did an oil change and air filter change. Needs license plate light and muffler to pass inspection.

General Comments:

Great truck. Nobody thought I'd make it across the USA, but I did.

1987 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 2.0 gas

Summary:

Good reliable pickup!

Faults:

Nothing wrong! But it is true that it has not enough power for high speed and mountain driving.

General Comments:

Very good gas mileage for a normal driving, and it still goes about 28 miles per gallon on its original engine with current 250,000 miles on this 1987 Truck (20 years old)! Fairly trouble free, and no major problems. Well, it is not for a lady to drive, and it is not for a young man to drive. If you are a good driver, this truck can go forever!

Yes, it is also true. This is a slow truck, but it is very reliable. In a matter of fact, my Mighty Max is far more reliable than my Toyota Camry.

I have a Toyota Camry, fairly new (1992), it's milege is only about 160,000 miles, but everything is falling down!

Costs me thousand and thousand dollars to fix it!

My Mighty Max only cost me about $50 per year to maintain it! It can drives to New York from San Francisco, go for many circles around all 50 states, again and again, and it still runs forever.

But, it does go slow, especially driving in mountains!

Year to date 2010; I have over 300,000.00 miles on my 1987 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 2.0 engine truck with manual transmission. This old work horse just keeps going, and now has been handed down to my son, who has now put on a new paint job, and repaired the old seats. Yes it is a slow car with no bells or whistles, and my thought is why give a first time driver a truck with too much power? If Mitsubishi brought this model back, I would purchase it immediately. They should have named this truck Hercules.

Wow that’s amazing, you got 300k miles out of it and it’s still going. I went with my brother in 1987 to buy a new Mighty Max and he paid $4,900 for it. The thing had zero options, but it was a great little truck. Unfortunately he traded it in for a 2 door Mitsubishi Montero in 1989 which was also a great truck. I believe that was around $9k. It’s a shame you can’t get things like that for so cheap anymore.

1987 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 2.6

Summary:

Reliable and Fun

Faults:

Things that need to be replaced momentarily:

Tie Rod Ends

Brakes, Rotors

Shocks

Electrical Light problem.

Things that were replaced by previous owner:

Head

Radiator

Battery

Interior Shifter Plate.

Minor Replacements at 148,000 miles:

Spark Plugs.

General Comments:

I recently picked up this truck for $500. This truck seems to have ran great for the previous owner. I have not had any substantial problems with it. Mostly minor problems, the brakes and rotors I am expecting to warp and wear down because this truck was sitting for 2 years. The previous owner had paid $3,000 for this truck from a dealer (haha), the dealer must have done the major repairs. The japanese sheet metal seems to rust very easily. The tires are also over-sized, meaning larger than factory wheels.

1987 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Sport 2.6

Summary:

An underestimated fun toy

Faults:

I replaced the spark plugs (with NGK), plug wires, as well as the cap and rotor almost a year ago, and along with a performance boost, they all still work great!

New Monroe shocks in January, but I prefer the "Sensa-Trac" to the type I have now.

New front brakes have been added, and a PCV valve as well.

Everything else is working as it should.

General Comments:

This truck, even after new shocks still rides like a skateboard. It seems to "bottom out" in the front suspension after hitting a speed bump at low speeds.

The seats could be much more comfortable. I find myself slouching forward instead of relaxing into the seat. During short trips around town the seat is easy to deal with, but on longer trips I wish for an extended cab with buckets.

There is a strong lack of after market/performance parts available, however there are more car clubs forming everyday with new ideas and techniques.

I think the styling of the Mighty Max is great, and better looking than many of the other pickups out there on the road.

I replaced my shocks on a 2001 Subaru Outback with Monroes and the rebound was like I had no shocks at all. Speed bumps were ridiculous; hard going over and then bounced twice before it settled down.

I also bought shocks for my 2000 Isuzu Trooper; same thing, and these were supposed to be competition shocks.

Re-ordered shocks for the Trooper with Rancho and no problem.

Don't know what's going on with these companies.
