Great, reliable car
Fan had to be replaced a few years ago.
Serpentine/drive belt went at about 120,000.
Alternator died at about 122,000.
Breaks are very squeaky.
Driver's side sun visor connection broke.
Handles very well.
Has very good pick-up for a 4 cylinder car.
Lots of leg room.
Nice size trunk.

Great, dependable, inexpensive car, period
Normal stuff, battery, alternator.
Both front axles redone, boots, bushings etc.
Gas filler tube rusted.
This car has been a gem.
Do regular maintenance, and it has never given a problem.
I beat this car up, but just keeps on ticking.
Engine and drivetrain have been flawless.

Fantastic
Distributor and alternator went at 130,000. Nothing else.
I have had 2 of these cars, identical year, color, everything and I LOVE IT.
I also had a 2003 Saturn Ion, and hated it because the Altima is very roomy and rides fantastic. Keep in mind it's not 13 years old, and other than the two problems I had last year, I've never had trouble with either of my 1999 Altimas. The first one I only got rid of because someone hit me and totaled it.
Old car or not, it looks fine for a mom with a car seat, and runs fantastic. Nissan products ONLY for me!

The only thing wrong with the car is squeaky brakes. For some reason that tends to be a defect that a lot of Nissan cars have. However, it only squeaks when the car is cold. After 5 minutes of driving the squeaking stops.
I purchased this vehicle used about a year ago, and it has all the upgrades that a 99 Altima SE could have, plus leather interior.
It has 175,000 miles and I have no issues with the engine. The steering wheel does not shake and it feels a smooth ride.
I also have a manual transmission, and always recommend purchasing a used car with manual transmission, because they last longer.
I am extremely impressed with the reliability that this 99 Altima has, and I am expecting it to go way past 200,000 miles.
My advice is take care of your Nissan and it will take care of you. This car in 1999 was voted JD Power and Assoc Motor Trend car of the year. It's unfortunate that some of you guys had problems with yours. I went shopping for a reliable Japanese car and compared it online with 99 Accords and 99 Camry's. Consumers and car magazines voted 99 Altima higher in reliability than those two, and better value for your buck!

I love this car
I replaced the flex pipe for $200. That didn't bother me, I find that acceptable.
I love this car, I couldn't expect much more out of this car. It is my baby, and it performs like a V6, like no joke. My friends sit in the car and they are surprised on how well this car performs.
I couldn't pick any other car to drive as my first car, however the car has minor dings from hail and stuff, I bought it like that. It still looks and runs great.

Following up on my review of this car. I still have it at 158,000 miles and it keeps on ticking. However, I did run into a couple of issues.
At 150,000 the entire exhaust system went kaput. Basically, fell apart at the exhaust manifold and a few places all the way back. Replaced the entire system.
Had a problem again with the driver's side front end, as the control arm cracked. Also, at 135,000 the rotor broke in the distributor... Easy fix.
This car has become my beater. I commute 30 miles every day... Drive all over town. I don't think it will ever die. Also, does not burn a single drop of oil.
