1990 Nissan Hardbody Pickup Base King Cab 2.4 Gasoline EFI

Summary:

Really cool little truck but not meant to be abused like a truck should be

Faults:

When I got the truck I knew it was a fixer upper and so I bought it with a blown transmission. It had the engine replaced before I bought it. Since I bought it I have had to replace the U-Joints (HORRIBLE JOB, they are "non- serviceable" so after getting several different sizes I opted to do some fabrication and tack weld them in since there are no c-clips and my drive-shaft is out of balance now. I guess you are supposed to buy a new shaft set which is totally not worth it), the oil pan (couldn't get one and went through hell trying to get it patched up), the rear main since I was in there, the door locks work intermittently and the passenger lock often gets stuck in the locked position, currently my gas tank is leaking. Parts are ridiculously hard to find.

General Comments:

When I first got this truck I knew it was in rough shape but the engine sounded good and it was solid. I only intended to get a couple of years out of it. Having said that, in the six months I've owned it anything that can go wrong has and you can't get parts. There are always parts listings but when they come in they don't fit.

Don't get me wrong, I love this little truck. Its cool looking, pretty easy to work on, it handles great, it is overly simple which I think is a major benefit, and I think the engine would go forever if treated properly. I think however that unless you have owned the truck since new you shouldn't expect to get anything over fifteen years out of them. All the parts are "non-serviceable" so if you need to replace the u-joints you are supposed to change the whole drive-shaft etc etc. I heard the line of thought is that if the transmission filter needs to be changed then the entire transmission is toast. I understand that line of thought but on a vehicle designed to be abused like a truck it doesn't fly with me. Next time I am getting a ranger or a Toyota if I win the lottery. It looks like next time is going to be within the next month.

My Nissan D21 Hardbody is the best truck I've ever owned. It's 24 years old with all original parts except fenders and bumper. It has 122000 miles on the motor. Some things I had to tweak, but it's a strong durable little truck. If treated right, they will last forever.

1990 Nissan Hardbody Pickup King Cab

Summary:

Great

Faults:

Bit of rust.

General Comments:

Its been outside, so some rust over the wheel wells.

Other than that, nothing has gone wrong. It just runs well all the time. Just maintenance... that's it.

I have had it a long time, and I suppose will always have it...

Yup.

1990 Nissan Hardbody Pickup Ext. cab

Summary:

It just won't die!

Faults:

There is a strange whirring noise when its cold and I'm driving around 30 mph. I've had 3 mechanics and countless non-mechanics look at it and none of them have any idea what it is. It's done it the entire time I've had it (10 yrs.) with no additional related problems, so I just turn up the radio.

I've had the transmission, clutch and altenator replaced, but all at over 100K miles.

The lights behind the dashboard and heater went out at different times. Never fixed them, so not sure what the problem is (not a fuse though).

The original paint was awful. The clear coat wore off the hood and roof sometime before I got it (1997). The paint gradually wore off too. Nissan recalled some of their higher end vehicles that year for this problem, but not the cheaper pick-ups.

The headlights have had strange problems. Right high beam wouldn't work, replaced headlight, still wouldn't work, swapped the left and right headlights then the left one wouldn't work and the right one was fine. Decided to live with one high beam. Don't need them much anyway...

General Comments:

This thing will probably live longer than I will! Aside from those little things, nothing has gone wrong with this thing. The motor is as strong as ever.

I am actually tired of it and want to replace it, but I'm having a hard time justifying a new car with this dependable beast!

I would like it to get a little better gas mileage though. I've had it tuned up, but it only gets in the low 20s in town.

Hello I have a 1990 Nissan pick up also. I have the same problem, but it keeps running fine.
