1986 Nissan Sentra 2 Door 1.6L

Summary:

A decent first car for the kids

Faults:

This car was a gift and sat for four years before I took ownership. I had to replace the valve cover gasket.

I replaced the rear wheel bearings.

I rebuilt the Hitachi Carb.

I replaced many vacuum lines and PVC hose.

I had to locate parts for the A/C tensioner assembly, as they are not easy to find. It only uses one V Belt for the compressor, so it wears out a belt very fast.

The interior is falling apart. This is typical for a car of its era.

The engine main seals are leaking oil.

The exhaust is rotten.

Performed a full tune up, plugs, wires, dist. cap, and rotor.

Fuel pump died so I converted it to an electric unit.

General Comments:

For a car with 122,000 miles that sat for 4 years, what more could you want?

Parts are not too hard to find for most items, however some hoses are a "Dealer Only" item. Unless you can piece one together like I did.

I have a grand total of 155 dollars invested in this car, as I did all labor myself, and the car was free.

I would steer clear of the early Sentra's, 86 and before, unless you are mechanically inclined, as they are riddled with carburetor and vacuum problems.

The A/C still works, however the car has no power with it turned on.

You should plan on a fuel pump going out, it's fairly common on these cars.

65 MPH is about all this car wants to do, any higher and it feels like it's screaming for mercy.

The clutch is very easy to master, this car is an easy one to learn on if you have never driven a standard before.

Visibility isn't bad, there are no blind spots.

This car isn't very comfortable, and I really don't think its all that safe either.

However with proper up-keep, they will run for many years.

1986 Nissan Sentra 1.6 Liter

Summary:

Buy one to find out

Faults:

Engine was replaced at 140,000 miles. This car is great. You can drive anywhere with no problems at all. Feels almost like a sports car. Holds the road nice.

General Comments:

I suggest that if you can find one, buy it!

1986 Nissan Sentra Base 1.6 liter 2 bbl.

Summary:

Seriously, I will cry the day this car dies

Faults:

I had to replace both CV joints at 145k miles.

I had to replace the alternator at 160k miles.

General Comments:

This nimble little car has a surprising amount of headroom inside and a good view out of the car in any direction.

Very neutral handling for a small front-driver... won't squeal the front tires unless you push hard.

I've had some carburetor problems lately so it hesitates when warm.

I've had this car for 5 years and almost 60,000 miles... and all for $300. I will gladly drive this car until she can give no more.

I can't wait to get my next Nissan Sentra, hopefully a 2002 SE-R V-Spec!

I too LOVE my 1986 Nissan Sentra. It is not an attractive car, a faded yellow hatchback with orange and brown pinstriping and all of the Wisconsin weathering. I paid $500.00 for that car 6 years ago, I have since put 85,000 miles on it and have had only to replace the headlights and such. No major mechanical problems to speak of...

Always change the oil with a high quality oil and filter, never exceed 3,000 miles between changes. It has been wonderful to cram in all of my hardware store projects and it gets me to grad school every time. I swear, I cannot kill it.

1986 Nissan Sentra

Summary:

A real dependable little friend...

Faults:

Only usual wear and tear, starts up every day, runs great in bad weather, a real champ... But I have to say the body is rotting, but I do live one block from the ocean.

General Comments:

Kick butt little car. Not a babe magnet, but it gets you to and from work.
