2000 Nissan X-Terra 3.3

Summary:

Seemed like a good idea at the time

Faults:

Window regulators, oil leaks, coolant leaks, distributor, radiator, A/C, diff noise, peeling clear coat.

General Comments:

More comfy/roomy than a comparable 4Runner.

Brake and clutch pedals are too close and I've slammed on the brakes endless times when shifting.

Mileage is marginal, lackluster power.

There is no reason a vehicle these days can't go 200K plus without major unit repairs.

The cooling system uses some 8 or 10 hoses, which some are impossible to change without major disassembly. Nissan also used sealer instead of gaskets on several of the assemblies, which has failed leaving endless annoying small coolant system leaks. Something like a failed hose on a trip thru Redneckistan, and you might as well burn the thing on the spot, as repairs will be in the thousands while Billy Bob tries to access some of the hoses.

2000 Nissan X-Terra XE 2wd 2.4 twin cam

Summary:

It offroads, on-roads, hauls and travels

Faults:

First thing was the battery/alternator.

Second was the clutch (we lived in the mountains and we shifted like a rally car driver. 100 turns makes 1 million shifts).

Oil pan gasket is leaking.

The rugs on the backs of the seats in the back are falling off from constant use. And they leave crumbs everywhere.

Other than that, nothing.

General Comments:

This X-Terra was equipped with a 2.4 liter twin cam KA24DE and a 5 speed manual transmission. Starts right away and doesn't burn any oil. The engine runs smooth, but leaks a small amount of oil. It even still runs good and solid for about 100 miles on between 3 and 3.5 quarts of oil. It should have about 5. No knocks or pings to this day. That's the engine!! Shifts smooth, but is a little tough to put into 1st gear when you are decelerating. This is helped by double clutching to get it all spinning again or heel/toe shifting. It's these low gears. That's the tranny!!

The interior is very spacious and feels nice. The seats are comfortable, the AC works good (but our pump is bad) so when we need the heater that works good. BUT, in this large interior, some back seat AC vents would be nice!

This cars exterior has a very tubular look. dudes. Ours was red. It's kind of faded now though so it is vibrant in the sun and looks better in overcast. The plastics on this car are strong and well put together. It has metal bumpers on it. the plastic surrounding the bumpers is merely aesthetic.

This car is easily customizable. It has the body for it. A prerunner bumper would be easy to put on, and would fit nicely with the graded rear bumper.

The car is very very nice, and deserves more than people seem to give it credit for. It's better than people think!!

I was told, 1st gear on these types of cars is not meant to be engaged while moving. Only from a stand still. Some safety design to protect the engine.

2000 Nissan X-Terra XE

Summary:

Runs great, no oil consumption, great gas mileage, all around dependable car that looks good

Faults:

Only three problems since purchase:

ABS, AC, cheap thermostat.

General Comments:

ABS went out at 51000. Too expensive to replace entire system. Blackjacked the dashlight out.

Thermostat tends to stick. Replaced with better aftermarket. Engine runs cool in AZ heat now.

A/C blew hot air intermittently. After replacing the entire system (at $1100+) it still did not work. HAVE to have A/C in Arizona. Local mechanic found a sensor up and behind glovebox area, replaced it at about $75, now it works GREAT!

Other than those 3 items, runs great, no oil consumption, great gas mileage; an all around dependable car that looks good.

2000 Nissan X-Terra XE KA24DE 2.4L 4 cylinder

Summary:

This is going to be one of those million mile cars

Faults:

Well, the clutch went at about 100K (our fault really. A slip on a clutch in the mountains on a hill, makes the clutch scream "KILL ME NOW!!!" when you end up on the highway)

The A/C went out off and on at about 140K, and then just quit all together at about 150K, and trust me, California summers, OUCH!!!

And the plastics in the back on the hatch have given a bit. Just don't abuse them like we have and they will stay where they belong.

General Comments:

This car is really nice for long trips. It runs great, and starts up every time.

The engine is a KA24DE (a fancy "code name" for a KA style inline 4, 2.4 liter, dual overhead cam engines) with 143 hp at 4300, and 190 lb.ft. of torque at about 3600, the 0-60 time is anywhere from 8-12 depending on the elevation. (at the 4500 we used to be at, 12. at the 2800 we are at now, 8). Passes smog easy, and this baby HAULS!!! I thought it was funny to have a 4 cylinder 5000 pound... thing pulling a 16 ft jet boat from Hesperia, CA to Cottonwood Cove, NV!!

Options we have are the roof rack, which is limited to 125 pounds (we have carried over 400 on it with no problems though), step rails that make getting in and out of this car easier for smaller people, the 5 speed stick allows you to drive like a long hauler one minute and like Jerry the racecar driver the next.

Handling? SUPERB!!! All I can say. Turning radius? tighter than our Corolla. Sometimes I wonder if the wheels are rubbing on the fenderwalls... yeah TIGHT. This beast gets about 24 mpg highway and about 19-20 highway. It's kinda flip flop.
