1994 Oldsmobile Achieva S 2.3 Litre L4

Summary:

FANTASTIC! A real winner

Faults:

The water pump had to be replaced at 245,000 miles.

Very little at all other than brake pads has gone wrong with this car.

General Comments:

This is a well built and fun car! With over 250,000 miles on it with no major work ever done on it, it is highly reliable.

I get a kick watching the look on the folks at Sears (tires) when they see how clean and nice running it is with so many miles.

Handling is a dream since I added Monroe Sensa-Trac struts.

Power is fantastic for the size! It is too bad Oldsmobile stopped selling this one!

Miles Per Gallon: 35.8+

1994 Oldsmobile Achieva S 3.1L V6

Summary:

Buy one if you can, you won't regret it

Faults:

I have owned this car for 2 years and put on 55,000kms and have not had one problem. The only thing I have done is oil changes, and I had the transmission flushed.

The only problem I had with the car was that the upper portion of the door panel likes to come undone from time to time, but it just snaps back on.

General Comments:

This car is bar none the best car I have ever owned or driven. It's comfortable, very good on gas, and very mechanically sound.

This car has power when called upon, brake system is excellent, and for an Oldsmobile is a lot of fun to drive.

For the price you can get one of these cars for now, it's the best deal on the road.

1994 Oldsmobile Achieva S 2.3L SOHC

Summary:

A reliable car, although not a fun one to drive

Faults:

My alternator broke at 55000 miles. ($250 repair)

My rotors warped at 62000 miles. ($250 repair)

My Ignition coil housing cracked at 63000 miles. ($400 repair)

My battery has needed replacing twice, once at 40,000 miles and again at 60,000 miles.

The paint around the detailing on the outside of the car is chipping.

General Comments:

This car was very reliable up until around 60,000 miles.

Interior is very comfortable for the driver and front passenger, leg room is somewhat cramped for the back seat.

Performance isn't very good. There is very slow acceleration, and the car feels like it is riding on Jello when cornering.

1994 Oldsmobile Achieva S 3.1

Summary:

OK basic transportation

Faults:

Both door panels are falling off and the vents are coming out of the dashboard. The car uses oil like no other car I've ever owned. It always smells like antifreeze, and is losing some to an unknown cause. We have been having idle problems too. The idle air motor was replaced as the code and my mechanic said neccesary, but the idle problems continue. The check oil and check gauges lights have always blinked on and off. We've put front and rear brake pads on it once each (which should be expected after close to 50k miles). Only the drivers power window works properly. Right now it looks like the belt and belt tensioner need to be replaced.

General Comments:

When this car was built they used some very cheap materials. In 1994 they knew how to make door panels that stay on, and vents that don't pop out of the panels and dash. This was already happening to our car at 40k miles.

This car is challenging for me to work on. I don't like the cramped transverse configuration of the 3.1. You need to drop the motor off its top motor mount just to change the drive belt. Also, it is so close to the inner wheel well it looks like changing my greatly expanded belt tensioner will be nearly impossible. The spring has let out so far, I can't even get a breaker bar between the fender and tensioner.

This car does have nice power, and somehow it runs really well. I don't however like the great amount of torque steer when you really mash the gas. It takes some getting used to. Also, the air conditioning is really good.
