1999 Oldsmobile Alero 3.4 V6

Summary:

Was great for first 4 years

Faults:

Terrific car for the first 3 years and 80000km or so.

Then the classic lower intake manifold gaskets went.

In short order after this;

It eats front bearings every 30000km.

Power drivers window goes frequently.

Lower manifold gaskets again at 160000km.

Rust along front of hood at 4 years old.

O-2 sensors every year or so.

Water pump at 100000km.

A few other things that are actually quite reasonable for thier life expectancy... struts, etc.

General Comments:

Was a terrific car for the first 3 years and 80000km or so. Great power, great handling, stylish, good equipment and features, awesome highway cruiser.

Only regret is having kept it for so long. Should have sold it earlier.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL

Summary:

A waste of engineering!

Faults:

I replace my brakes about 3 or 4 times a year. I had to replace the engine, which blew for no apparent reason. Had to replace my fan, heater core, and selenoid cylinder. The seats wear out fast. My rear passenger door is frozen shut. Cannot open it at all! The trunk hasp broke off. The light overhead is loose, front springs are broke. The button on my shifter broke off. Generally a heap of manure!!

General Comments:

This is a nightmare car. I had always had luck with older model GMs, which is why I purchased this one. however, after having this Alero, I will NEVER EVER buy a GM make again. they, obviously went downhill fast!

1999 Oldsmobile Alero 2.4 twin cam

Summary:

Reliable and cheap!!

Faults:

This car is slow to accelerate from a stop.

Once it shifts into 2nd gear, I have no trouble with acceleration.

This is a 2.4L engine and is bit noisy on the highway.

General Comments:

This car handles well on the road.

I have never had a problem with this car.

Looks sharp and sporty once you wash the the salt, from the "Ohio" roads, off.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero V6

Summary:

Typical GM car

Faults:

Engine Coolant overflow has cracked three times/needed replaced...110,000 130,000 and 165,000 miles.

Replaced intake gasket at 166,000 miles.

Brakes wear very fast compared to other cars I've owned.

Loads of electrical problems.

AC needs charged every summer.

Motor for drivers side window broke around 140000.

General Comments:

Overall this has been a pretty reliable car. Bought it at 100,000 miles and put almost another 100,000 miles on it. Things have gone wrong, but for the miles its expected.

It sucks that the Alero isin't made anymore. I love the power of the v6 engine, and the car handles very well. I wouldn't say that it was the most reliable vehicle, but I sure enjoyed driving it.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL 3.4 V6

Summary:

This car should have been pulled from the production line!

Faults:

Front Wheel Bearings replaced 4 times. The speed sensor is located in the wheel bearing assembly itself. So, when the anti-lock brake & no trac light comes on, it is a faulty speed sensor and the whole bearing has to be replaced. STUPID DESIGN!

Also, the clips on my windows have now broken 3 times. There are black clips and white ones. One set can be replaced, while the other set requires a whole new piece of glass.

One time I had to replace the window tracks themselves.

Replaced the radiator and it will be needing a new transmission.

Also, the heater blower motor just went out. Not sure yet if it is the motor itself or the resistor.

Both door locks have been replaced, as they wouldn't latch, which meant the door stayed opened.

Rear view mirror continually falls off.

The trunk latch was replaced, but again is tempermentaly working.

Got a new gas door at the junkyard b/c the old one stayed ajar.

HVAC interior switch only works on the speeds it wants to given the day of the week.

Tie rods have been replaced twice now.

Turn signals only work when they want and forget about it when it is raining.

Floating caliper on front right brakes seized together leaving me with no brakes on that side.

Moonroof has recently decided to open, but not close on command!

General Comments:

GM did not think when they designed the Alero.

Not only does every possible thing go wrong, but the repairs are not easy and the pieces and parts are SO hard to get to.

Please save yourself the money.

It has been five years of nothing, but nickle and diming me to death!!!
