1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale 3.8L V6

Summary:

I love my car

Faults:

Water pump went at about 80,000 miles.

Engine has a tendency to surge driving uphill mountain roads.

General Comments:

This is a great car! I bought it right off the showroom floor in '88 and have only had one breakdown (water pump as noted above). It has been extremely reliable car and for me, very inexpensive to own. The cabin is very roomy and comfortable especially on long trips. I live in a "road salt" free area so the body is in great shape as is the interior. I am proud of the car and the way it looks. I plan on keeping this as long as possible. My philosophy is that as long as it looks decent and runs well, why replace it with car payments, higher insurance, higher plate fees, etc.

I know a guy with the same car and it sucks.

I purchased two 1988 Oldsmobiles the same week from Craigslist and they both had less than 75,000 miles on them. Neither of them have had any problems. The cars are 21 years old, purchased from one owners, got both for under $3.300. One is a Royal Brougham 88 and the other is a Royal Brougham 98. The 88 Royal Brougham gets 30 miles per gallon and the 98 the best has been 28. The 98 did have shifting problems but replaced the coil and the car shifted just fine again.

So we have his and hers Oldsmobiles. Fun!

Summary:

A great starter-mobile!

Faults:

60,000 mile checkup revealed worn out front brake pads. New fuel filter (still running on original) and radiator flush also were necessary.

Drivers side armrest fell off at about 61,000 miles.

Drivers side seatbelt occasionally hitches, takes several tugs to get loosened up enough to buckle.

Rear drivers side door is hard to open and makes a groaning noise.

Windshield trim on drivers side is loose, in high winds it bangs against the top of the car.

Cracks in steering wheel from being left out in the sun.

Paint is faded in many spots.

General Comments:

Purchased the car in July of last year for $2500 dollars. Extremely low mileage for a car of that age.

It's surprisingly powerful, much more than it's looks and size would have you believe. Handles well in making tight turns and quick lane changes on the highway.

Comfort is top notch. It comfortably seats 5 passengers, 6 in a pinch.

I have a fairly stripped down model... no power windows, power locks, or cassette. But the factory radio is ample in volume and quality, and the windows roll up and down easily.

A/C and heat are more than adequate, though A/C does suck away too much power from the engine.

Gas mileage is much better than expected. Average around 20MPG city, close to 30MPG Highway.

Two minor quibbles:

1) Goes through windshield wipers like crazy.

2) Transmission sometimes lurches going uphill or when extreme acceleration is needed.

This was my first car, and I don't think I could've made a better choice. It's been comfortable and reliable, and maintenance costs have been low.

I had the same problem (groaning, stickiness) with the front door on my 1987 LeSabre (same car, different grille). Anyway, I found just oiling it made a world of difference. WD-40 works for about 2 months at a time, 10W30 has lasted 2 years. Try it, I think it'll work for your car too.

1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 3.8 Liter Buick V6

Summary:

Comfortable, reliable and reasonably fast

Faults:

Numerous electrical problems have plagued this car. Somewhere there is a lose ground wire and no one can find it.

The electric window motors all have died and been replaced.

The faulty electrical system causes the car to burn up alternators. The check engine light comes on without any apparent reason. Later is goes out.

General Comments:

This car is comfortable, always reliable, very fast for a non-V8 car, and has shown no signs of slowing down as it approaches the 200,000 mile mark. Both the engine and transmission are doing fine.

I can agree with this review, approaching 212,000 miles, it is still the first off the line when need be. But my windows died also.
