1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal Brougham 1.8L V6

Summary:

This car has great acceleration with a high level of comfort and durability

Faults:

The arm rests on the door have broken.

The ignition coil was only firing to four cylinders and had a weak fire to a fifth when I bought the car.

The back right door will only lock with the power locks and is otherwise electrically dead.

The windows roll up and down slow.

The engine mounts started going bad about a month ago.

General Comments:

I bought the car for $200 and have driven it hard the whole time. I change the oil on a regular basis and fix all problems that it has.

I stripped the seats and the trunk out to gain time on the strip. It runs 17.8 with the seats and 17.0 without the seats. I have beat a Camaro, a station wagon with a 305 cubic inch V8, a Mazda MX-6, a Honda CRX, a Nissan truck, a modified Honda Accord, a Dodge Neon, and a Chrysler, but I don't remember the model of the Chrysler.

The car has a very comfortable ride and a lot of room.

The car is very durable. I have driven the car up to 70 miles per hour on a dirt road. I have also mastered the emergency brake slide at high and low speeds. At high speed you normally don't need the emergency brake to slide though. The car tops out at 120 miles per hour. It has also been wrecked five times. Once before I got it, someone hit the back right quarter panel. Since I have had it, I have slammed it sideways into a steel fence at 45 miles per hour, hit the front of a Honda CRX at about 2 miles per hour, rear ended the same CRX at 25 miles per hour, and earlier this week I backed into the rim of a moving Ford Explorer at like 2 miles per hour. The only accidents that caused dents were the quarter panel and the fence.

The car can also take a corner very good for it's size.

So far the engine and transmission have not given me any troubles.

How exactly did you know you were doing 120MPH? I thought there speedometers only went up to 85MPH.

1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 royale 3.8L

Summary:

I love driving this car

Faults:

Transmission was started slipping at 193000 miles cost $1000 to replace.

Engine was knocking at 202000 replaced with wrecking yard engine $200.

Front brakes replaced.

Rear struts replaced.

General Comments:

I think that the former owner treated the car poorly. I have seen other 3.8L engines go many more miles.

This is by far the most comfortable car I've ever owned.

It has all the options including a sunroof.

I love cruising the highway with the car, but it lacks passing power over 60 mph.

Lacks passing power?

You must have issues with your transmission, or drivetrain. This vehicle will easily do 120mph!

I have to agree with the guy who wrote the last letter... Unless there are mechanical problems, the 3.8 liter is generally known to run great, and run well up over 250,000 miles.

1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal Braugham 3.8L V6

Summary:

A classy high powered smooth ride

Faults:

Winsheild Washer motor died after buying it. Power windows are slow, and passenger side power window managed to break itself.

General Comments:

This was my mechanics project car, so the engine was completely re-done just before I bought it so I've had no problems in the short time I've owned it so far. This car is very comfortable and has power to spare, I've noticed other reviews mentioned the power and I totally agree, very easy to get carried away with speed in this car. One thing I've also noticed is that the heater does not put out much air. Overall this car is very quick and easy on gas, and I like the power everything.
