1992 Plymouth Acclaim 2.4L 4 cylinder.

Summary:

This one seems to be an indestructible beast

Faults:

I bought this car from my mechanic in 2003 when my wife suddenly needed a second vehicle. He said it was a good car and he was right. I paid $1500 for it and decided, at that price, I was not going to put much in the way of repairs into it. However, it soon became my car and I used it to get to work, 90 miles each way on a freeway for two years. By then I had put nothing into it and my mechanic said he could get me another few years for not a whole lot of money. Front brakes, serpentine belt, timing belt, exhaust system, front axle seals and a tune-up later (total spent: $800; my mechanic's a keeper!). This car is still running; we've owned it for four years and have put a total of 80,000Km on it, with no more repairs. It's reverted back to my wife's car and I'm on my second year with a 1994 Caravan bought from the same mechanic for, again, $1500.

General Comments:

I would own another one of these things any time. It's not pretty to look at, but it's comfortable for its size and it just runs and runs and runs. On a cost-per-year basis, I've never had a vehicle as good as this. If it wants to keep running (and it shows no signs of stopping), I'll keep it another four years.

1992 Plymouth Acclaim

Summary:

Good economical reliable transportation

Faults:

I had the car two months when the transmission needed to be overhauled, the car had just over 70,000 miles so Chrysler honored the old 7/70 warranty and paid half of the $1800 repair.

Valve seals and timing belt were replaced at 150,000 miles.

General Comments:

I would not trade my "beater" for anything. The car has been extremely reliable. Even in sub-zero weather it has started with no problem. There is plenty of interior room and the back seat folds down to make sort of a hatchback so you can haul plenty in the trunk. A mechanic at the local Chrysler dealership where I have it worked on bought one for his son for a first car, that speaks volume to me. The 3.0 6 cylinder engine has a little lifter noise, but hey after 248K the old girl is allowed to grumble a little. It has always been great with mileage and acceleration. One thing that does bug me is the fact that you can't keep hubcaps on it, take a look around at most Acclaims and you will notice that they are missing two or more hubcaps.

Would love to hear an update on your Acclaim!

How many miles does it have now?

Any work it's needed since posting this?

Just bought 1 for my daughter as her 1st car and it has 246k miles on it. Runs smooth, sounds nice. Hoping it'll last her quite awhile.

Summary:

What a deal!

Faults:

Radio failed.

Trunk gasket came loose.

General Comments:

Unusual situation. I assisted my mother-in-law in buying this vehicle. She owned it for 5 years and put 12,000 miles on it before giving up driving. She then sold it in 1999 to a friend of my wife.

Now in March, 2005, the friend who still owns the vehicle wants to return it to us. 135,000 miles, no scratches or dents. Says he changed plugs in it twice, two sets of tires and serviced it every 5000 miles. No problems at all with it. Says it was worth far more to him the last 6 years than he paid us for it and wants to GIVE it back!
