1990 Plymouth Colt 1.5L FI

Summary:

Great gas mileage and great motor

Faults:

Battery replaced

New manual transmission

New radiator (my fault)

Manifold gasket

Fuel pump went out

Fuel filter.

General Comments:

Great car, gets great gas mileage. My motor wasn't tuned right I guess, it didn't have the greatest acceleration, but I guess most others have great pick up. Couldn't keep mine around long enough to get it tuned. Keep out of tall grass (that is how I lost mine) the catalytic converter caught the grass on fire and then melted a fuel line and made car go bye bye. I would have kept the car if it hadn't happend.

I put a ton of miles on this car when I was in high school and college before giving it to my younger brother with 93,000 on it. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't the roomiest car on the planet. I'm convinced the motivation for this car was someone's snap-together model in the early 80s. It was 75 percent plastic. One rear shock went out after about 25,000, the other four years later.

Once I handed it over, the CV joints went out. So did the AC. Then an oil leak sprung. I tried to convince my brother to make it a drop-top (that would have been freaking awesome), but the engine burnt up on him one day and the car died.

1990 Plymouth Colt 1.5

Summary:

Not worth your money to, but a used COLT

Faults:

Brakes have gone out 4 times. CV joints twice. Have to replace the oil all of the time. Have had many problems with the wiring to brake lights and to stereo. Seats have worn very badly.

General Comments:

I think for the most part the 90' Colt has been a good car to me. Never died on me once, but has given me a lot of mechanical problems. I think that is has a lot of power for being such a small engine, it will get going! I would not buy another car like this ever. I would rate this car as a decent, low gas mileage car.

1990 Plymouth Colt 100 E 1.5L

Summary:

An economical, fun to drive vehicle

Faults:

Nothing major to report.

Chews through front tires, still have the original 11 year old tires in rear (still like brand new)

Battery lasted roughly 9 years. Minor, regular maintence was all that was required to keep running.

The rear seat fabric has begun to wear badly, seat covers will be put on in the near future.

Thermostat failed and was replaced 3 times.

General Comments:

There is a lack of power in the 1.5L engine, supposedly rated at 67 horsepower. The 3 speed automatic robs it of horsepower. On highway, the engine runs out of breathe, goes up to about at 115 Km/h (I've yet to get it up to 125km/h, if it's up to it!) It desperately needs a 4th or even fifth gear.

Excellent city car, driving road tests were made easy due to the high visibility on every angle.

Handling is excellent for a car of this price, I reccomend installing wider tires.
