1991 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE

Summary:

Unreliable, tranny and motor problems 100k

Faults:

Transmission seals started leaking right after we got it. Took it back to used car dealer (nice guy) and he fixed it at 117,000 miles cost of repairs $500.

Threw a rod into the oil pan on the freeway and motor had to be rebuilt so we traded it for a Ford Aerostar at 118,000 miles.

General Comments:

I would never buy another Plymouth Grand Voyager minivan again. We only owned it for a few weeks and had problems with the transmission AND the motor at 117,000 miles.

The only good thing I have to say about it is that it was very roomy.

I just purchased this van for $325 with 107000 miles. The transmission doesn't work in 3rd gear and the brakes are a little sloppy. Guess I'll just change the oil, check the brakes, drive in the drive setting and wait to see if she grows on me before I consider extensive repairs. Thank you for the reviews of potential problems.

I have purchased a used 91 Grand voyager, but after 3 months of driving it, it seemed to start falling apart. The brake pads needed replacing, it wasn't driving properly anymore, I financed it from a used car dealer, but the guy won't seem to do anything about it.

Brake pads just need to be replaced as a normal part of driving a car, so they're not necessarily a sign that the car is falling apart. It's a fairly inexpensive part of routine maintenance. The car may not be driving right (not sure what you mean by that) if the rotors are warped. They should be turned (i.e. ground down to make a smooth surface at a machine shop) at the same time you replace the brakes. Turning rotors costs about $8 each, and a set (1 set for both front wheels) of brake pads costs $20 to $30, typically.

1991 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE V6 Gasoline

Summary:

The best Minivan ever made!

Faults:

New front axle (both halves)

On it's 3rd transmission (1st one was my fault, 2nd one was the mechanic's fault)

Battery cables.

Fuel rail, radiator.

The gas gauge broke& the door open light stayed on since shortly after I bought it.

Mostly little things.

General Comments:

I love this van so much, it crossed the country 16 times& went from Florida to New York 6 or 7 times. Very reliable, always got me home even when something big broke. The transmission broke and it went into emergency gear so I was able to 'limp' home 75 miles.

One time the axle, power steering pump& the radiator broke and it got me home.

Very good in the snow, I was able to out run and out maneuver Jeeps in deep snow. It handled better than the newer Voyagers and I say this with experience.

The only thing that upsets me about it is the customer service of Chrysler Dealerships, they all seem to be the same...bad.

Roomy interior, comfortable, was able to move a lot of things on moving day.

Got into a head-on collision, saved my life. If I knew where they sent it I'd go and restore it I like it so much.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

"Very good in the snow, I was able to out run and out maneuver Jeeps in deep snow. It handled better than the newer Voyagers and I say this with experience."

I SERIOUSLY doubt that, as I own and have owned many Jeeps.

My dealer has bent over backwards to make sure I am a happy customer. They ALWAYS call the next day after an oil change to see how the service was, and ask me would I change anything to make service better. I love how they let me stand out there and watch the mechanic work on my Jeep, so that he can't try to pull anything stupid.

We were going up the side of a ski slop and YES we did pass all sorts of Jeeps (I have pictures to prove it), we had BRAND NEW tires so that helped. It was also heavier than the newer Voyagers I have owned which weren't good in the snow.

I own 3 Jeeps myself, a Grand Wagoneer, a Wrangler and a Cherokee and I love them all.

You're lucky, you found a good Chrysler Dealership. I wasn't trying to bash Chrysler, I LOVE what they make, but I don't care for the way they have treated me in the past. I've been to at least 12 dealers& there was only one which I liked.
