Just a great car

Radio went bad.

Rear struts failed.

Rear defroster died.

Headliner fell.

General Comments:

I loved this little car.

I got it cheap, and it had some problems for sure. But like any car, especially an older one, if it had been better taken care of, it would have lasted.

I picked it up cheap, and I did most, if not all, of my own maintenance. I'm mechanically inclined, but despite the tightness of the engine bay, it's fairly straight forward to work on.

I had the base engine, which didn't make a lot of power. But I think the O2 sensor went bad at the end of its life and got stuck in an open loop, because it was dumping a lot more gas into the engine to compensate. It wasn't great for the car, but it moved faster. That probably was what killed it.

I drove this car everywhere. I never felt bad about taking it to school in Detroit or to visit friends in Lansing.

In fact, when it died, the rear main seal went on my way to MSU. I didn't know this at the time. So on Sunday, I filled it back up with oil and drive 90 miles with almost no oil. This thing was like an old arthritic dog whose last mission was to get me home.

It was the only car I was ever really attached to, and I miss it. I would get another one, but here in Michigan, people ask way too much for their secondhand cars, and the ones that do exist are usually "pimped" out by some kid who wears Puff Diddly clothes or whatever, and who has usually driven the car into the ground.

But overall, I'd recommend the car. Take care of it, and it'll take care of you.

1991 Plymouth Laser 1.8 EFI

Summary:

Overall, a good car

Faults:

The starter went bad around 100,000 miles.

Radio went bad at 85,000 miles.

General Comments:

I really enjoyed the Plymouth Laser. Overall, it handled amazingly well, had decent gas mileage and was the most comfortable car I've ever owned.

It did lack power, but I don't expect much from a 1.9-liter engine. Besides, I bought the car for economy, not speed.

I'm over 6 feet tall, but this is the only car I've had that allowed me to stretch out my legs.

The car did have a few problems, with the major problem being oil leakage and burning. However, I attribute this to the fact it has been sitting for over one year (which is why I will not list these as defects of the car). However, it still ran well. The rear main seal went at 112,000 miles, but again, if it had it been taken care of, I think it would have lasted longer.

I picked it up my mother's friend for only $400, and I more than got my money's worth. I would recommend the car.

1991 Plymouth Laser RS 2.0

Summary:

Great!!!

Faults:

Transmission went out at 198,000 miles.

General Comments:

This was a great car. I wish I still had it. It was quick, sporty and got noticed. It was as reliable as they come was well.

After 198,000 miles the transmission went, and I figured it was not worth the cost in fixing it. It's a shame they don't make all the Diamond Star cars anymore, or Plymouth for that matter.

1991 Plymouth Laser

Faults:

Faulty air sensor.

Spark plug blew out twice.

Broken piston or cracked cylinder.

General Comments:

Reliable car for over ten years.

Only had faulty air sensor after about five years..easy fix.

Started to go bad after the first time the spark plug blew out. This happened a second time. Then it died. Mechanic was not sure if piston broke and cost to take apart/fix was as much or more than car was worth.
