1997 Plymouth Neon 4 cy

Summary:

A good car to start with, but runs to loud for me to trust it on a long trip

Faults:

My drivers wheel bearing went out.

General Comments:

I think it runs loud, but I have had it in many shops in town and they all say the same thing Neon run loud there in nothing wrong.

The seats aren't comfortable.

The brakes are loud, but are over 60%. I even had them cleaned.

When ever I turn the steering wheel it makes noise, but I have power steering fluid.

My Neon has all the paint peeling off. This doesn't matter because at 67,000 miles the engine blew. This is the worst car that I have ever owned and would never buy another. I believe that the car makers should have to stand behind their products.

Summary:

Avoid at all costs or you will be sorry

Faults:

Easier question is what didn't go wrong with this car.

Car was a year old when I bought it.

The Neon is known to have problems with the head gasket.

Leaked oil because of head gasket problem.

I went through 3 batteries in less than a year and I never left my lights on.

Transmission went completely out a week after I traded the car in with only 40,000 miles on it.

General Comments:

The manufacturer knew of the issues that the Neon had with the head gasket and tried to work with me.

I could not afford to fix this car. I traded it in before it fell completely apart (1 week later).

I would not recommend this car to my worst enemy.

In my opinion, it has entirely too many problems to me a year old or to have only 40,000 miles on it.

1997 Plymouth Neon Highline

Summary:

Cheap for a reason... Dodge's dirty little lemon

Faults:

What hasn't gone wrong with the car???

First was the three times I ran out of gas when the gauge read 1/4 tank. Had to be towed because it wasn't until the third time that the mechanic could figure out what the problem was.

Then the transmission started to do bizarre things, revving when I wasn't moving and not accelerating.. it felt like I was just a bad stick driver when the car was an automatic.

Then I had to replace a gasket.

The oil started to leak, they replaced another gasket, but the oil leakage continued.

The brakes squeaked from day one. Got new ones, they squeaked too. Spent another $200 to have the brakes cleaned (pretty sure that was a rip off from a mechanic who I won't go to again). Brakes still squeaked.

The windshield cracked.

I was on a trip when the radiator fan blew. Stranded and had to spend another $500 just to get the car home.

Replaced another gasket, tires at about 65,000.

Failed a smog check at 65,000 miles because the check/engine light was on. Replaced an oxygen sensor, check engine light was off long enough to pass the smog check, and then came back on again.

General Comments:

Sold the car for pennies just so that I wouldn't be afraid of every little noise and all the many things that could still go wrong.

I once read about the Neon that it is Plymouth's dirty little secret.. this is so true. I wouldn't buy another one unless I was a mechanic or if I was rich enough to maintain it, oh wait, if I had money I would have never bought this car in the first place.

1997 Plymouth Neon Highline Sedan 2.0 16v DOHC

Summary:

The worst vehicle I ever owned!

Faults:

With in one month of purchasing my Neon, the oil started leaking. Found out it was the head gasket, and Chrysler denied any help. I finally fixed it myself, after some time, not an easy job.

The radiator top seal blew while I was sitting at a stop light.

The oil pressure switch and both the oxygen sensors went at the same time.

And the latest and greatest of all the problems is that a rod broke while I was driving my car and went through the block. I was told it's not worth repairing, because the repair cost more than the car itself. This after 75,500 miles!

General Comments:

The car feels good as long as you don't consider the cheap engines that are placed into them. I think the engines are built to break.
