Summary:

Great car for the price, but hard to find parts to fix it

Faults:

Well the guy that I bought it from was a pack rat, and I asked him about it, and he said he would sell it for 500 bucks; I couldn't pass up a deal like that.

When we got it home, the guy left gas in the gas tank so we has to gut the fuel tank out. We knew it ran because we put gas in the carburetor. So when we got all the hinges off of the gas tank, we found out that there was very rusty gas residing in the bottom, and the fuel pump was shot. We got the fuel pump after searching around for some time, and I was charged 50 bucks.

So we got that running and took it for a test drive. The ride was terrible, I looked at the tires and they flattened. Came to find out the guy had it sit for 15 years in the same spot. Plus the driver's side brakes froze up. Both front and back. The brakes were 50 bucks each. The wheels were 75 bucks.

Now the transmission was making a funny noise, so I moved a little gear to see if I could see what the problem was. The transmission chewed that little gear up. It was the speedometer gear and it has got to be hardest car part to find on planet earth. I still haven't found one, and it's been 2 months.

General Comments:

Great car, fun to drive, but don't move any gears in the transmission.

I have never had a problem finding a part for my 84 SE. Autozone has had everything so far. I have rebuilt the engine completely, new shocks, struts, bearings, regular stuff too. Oh yeah, strange parts like the body and mirrors etc, can be had via the Fiero Store or the junk yards with more time and effort than is pleasant... but it can be done.

Good luck, and join a Fiero club near you, as there will probably be one!

Summary:

Great car, needed better engineers

Faults:

Being a rear engined car, the engine bay would get extremely hot. The cause of this was that what little ventilation was in the rear deck lid was not enough. The engine benefited greatly when I built a ram air vent kit for it.

This car was horrible on starters. Due to the high temps in the engine bay, long trips would fry starter motors. The starters were made with plastic gears, which would melt in the extreme heat.

General Comments:

With the extreme heat in the engine bay, the car ran extremely cool. This was due to the radiator being in the front, and the coolant being feed to the engine by metal pipes running under the car.

Tune-ups were a breeze in this car. I could change all my plugs and wires in the time it took to change the oil. General upkeep was cheap. The most expensive part was all the starters I had to replace.

I love the car. It really was ahead of its time. The engine, transmission (4sp) was wonderful. While I have fond memories, I am glad it is gone. I owned it when I was in college and commuted over 400 miles a week.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes
