1994 Pontiac Firebird Formula 5.7 LT1
Fast car with attitude
Optispark distributor failure.
Radiator hoses leaked and needed to be replaced.
Hatch struts couldn't support weight.
Headlight motor failure.
Power window motors failed.
Driver seat ripped badly (bought it this way).
Hatch spoiler design collects rain water - dumps directly into the trunk when opened.
I can't complain much - I bought this car with almost 160k on it, and it's about an 18 year old machine. The body design is ahead of its time, and still looks great in my opinion. A beautiful modern muscle car that I wanted to own since I was a child.
This car is factory built to go fast and straight. On the highway, when I step on the gas, it feels like it will never slow down, as I'm held back in the bucket seat with a smile on my face.
Handling is decent, but this solid rear-axle, heavyish car doesn't handle turns and bumps like I always thought it would. Best use is a smooth, dry, open road. There are plenty of aftermarket handling modifications available though. I would love to have been able to get a feel for this car when it was new off the lot.
The t-tops are great to have out on a sunny day, but some models are prone to leaking water. Luckily mine don't leak, but when any rain/dew is collected on roof of car, it drips directly into the window if cracked at all, and all over the door armrest controls and my lap...
My automatic Formula has the transmission perform button, and it does make it shift more accurately and firmer. Nice feature for a little fun or showing off for a passenger. Will spin tires on the 1-2 shift!
How many affordable cars can do that stock?
Interior feels good to the driver except for low visibility. Seat, wheel, pedals and controls all feel nice and tight to me. True cockpit feeling - and this car sits low and is hard to enter and exit, especially with backpacks and other belongings. Passengers will most likely comment on how small the interior is, and the backseat simply isn't made for adults...
I'm a mid-twenties male with no kids, so this car has a been an overall pleasure to own, despite what negatives I have mentioned. I don't regret buying it, and it's a very fun, styling ride. People want to race me all the time. Sometimes I can't resist putting it in perform mode, and let the exhaust and chirping tires do the talking, as they watch my tail lights get further away.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No
