1992 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.3L OHC

Summary:

Not a wise decision

Faults:

The head gasket blew at 70,000 miles.

The water pump broke.

The thermostat needed to be replaced.

The brakes needed to be redone twice.

The alternator needed to be changed.

The starter needed to be changed.

The radiator needed to be replaced.

The head needed to be machined.

The exhaust is going to need to be replaced very shortly.

The interior rattles very badly.

The car idles rough.

It hesitates off the line.

Have actually had it stall on me before in an intersection (it's an automatic).

General Comments:

This car seemed like a nice buy before I discovered the evil that lurks around this vehicle. I learned my lesson and will take proper measures not to make the mistake again. I will definitely buy a Japanese car next time. They are more economical than this car and they also last much longer with little or no repairs, unlike this car.

I have a 93, V6, automatic (wife's car) which has had the same engine problem:

Idling rough, stalling at the intersection as well.

Hint: I replaced the harmonic balancer, which was all, but gone. (100k+ miles)

Now it purrs like new.

I have the same car with the same engine. (1992 grand AM SE 4 cyl. 2.3 liter OHC) It runs great and looks nice too. I think all of your problems are from a bad mechanic who is guessing at a problem and not getting it right the first, second, third,...hundredth time. I fix my car myself and take good care if it. I check all the fluid level every week (under the hood not from the computer inside the car), and if it is going to be sitting for a long time I like to start it every 2-3 days to make sure the engine gets oil run through it. Maybe my car has not been a problem cause of all the time I take to make sure it is in proper order.

1992 Pontiac Grand Am SE Quad OHC 2.3 L

Summary:

Better have money to burn if you want it

Faults:

Needed new brake pads and seems to need new ones again.

Car stalls due to torque converter computer problems. A cable had to be disconnected from the computer.

Leaks engine coolant, had to get special coolant pipe from the manufacturer, took over a week!

Needs a new starter box.

Very loose steering wheel.

General Comments:

I think it's one of the most relaxing cars I have ever driven. Very fun to drive when there are no problems with it.

Don't have to worry about it getting stolen (who would waste their time!).

Very good acceleration. Good gas mileage.

You better know a good mechanic if you want this car.

1992 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.3 V-6

Summary:

GT is the poor man's sports car with style and class!

Faults:

Struts.

Front brakes.

Drive axle.

2 sets of expensive off size tires.

Plug wires.

Lower control arm.

General Comments:

Very solid sports car feel on any road. With the 3.3 V-6, acceleration is comparable to the 3.8. I ran a 17.6 in the 1/4 mile with plug wires, 106000 miles old.

1992 Pontiac Grand Am SE Quad 4

Summary:

A great first car

Faults:

I had problems with the manifold gasket at 60,000 miles. This may have been due to running at 80-100+ MPH for an hour.

The heater is not currently working, but the air conditioner works fine.

General Comments:

This is a great car for cruising, very comfortable and great stock speakers.

It's not the best looking car, but better than most. It got me through high school.
