1994 Pontiac Grand Am SE Quad 4

Summary:

Would buy another

Faults:

Timing chain gasket leaking, causing oil to be sprayed into engine compartment.

Alternator died about 6 months, and 9 months after purchase, may have been due to oil spray.

Engine seized at 220,000 miles, with no hope of return. Probably due to a cracked and repaired oil pan that occurred about a month prior. I believe that if the oil pan hadn't cracked on this car, I may still well be driving it.

Transmission was slipping in 2nd gear at the time of the car's demise.

Power windows were off track.

Only rear speakers worked.

Wipers would sometimes freeze in cold weather. (Very dangerous on white-out mountain highways where I lived at the time)

General Comments:

Despite all of its quirks, I loved this car. Once I learned how to manage it, it was a very, very good car. I used to drive it from Pittsburgh to Morgantown nearly weekly with no problems at all. Handled decently, fuel consumption was not exceptional either way.

1994 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.1 V6

Summary:

Great starter car

Faults:

First thing is a common problem with this type of car; the windows fall off the track and roll down like lambo doors, but I fixed this myself.

Then at around 170,000 miles the heater core broke, costing an arm and a leg.

Around 175,000 miles my upper radiator hose split (most likely because of my lead foot) and normal wear and tear. This was only a $16.00 fix.

The latest problem happened when a friend got out of the back. He rubbed the railing and the cover broke off.

General Comments:

The car handles great and quick if well maintained.

The cabin is welcoming, but with a few snags: the ash-tray / cup holder makes me mad -- I just use it to hold change. But it was only when I read the manual that I found the secret cup holders on the passenger side that open with a push of a button that's out of sight. But the car is very comfortable from the seats to the leg space.

Some would say that's a lot of problems for a car, but the car has over 150,000 miles and is over a decade old.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I just found that my 94 grand am gt has a lot of problems I can't seem to drive it for more than 2 weeks without something going wrong on it. I am not even rough with the car and it just seems that it always breaks down.

Faults:

I have to agree with 9:21. I purchased (brand new) a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am when my Mercury Topaz was totalled in an accident.

I love driving it, it has been nothing, but reliable. It had some very minor body rust around the gas cap area and I had the car repainted by my body shop. It looks amazing! The only real trouble I have had is with one mechanic telling me I needed new struts and strut assembly for the front end when I told him I thought the motor was loose. He charged me $750.00 for struts and mounts and assured me that was the problem. NOT! It turned out to be a broken motor mount which he then replaced for free. I had nothing, but problems with the struts from that day on and pursued the mechanic. He finally agreed to let me have them replaced somewhere else and return the parts to him for a full refund. Idiot!

Anyway the only other problem I have had is in the last two years. I have had the "wet floor" syndrome. I have had my body shop check everything. Its in on a weekly basis when it rains. Its going in again tomorrow for what better be a thorough check. The owner is looking it over himself. I will repost a notice if we find the problem.

I have been the only owner of this car and it still looks brand new inside and out. No complaints. If they did make a 2007 Grand Am I might think about it but the G6 in my opinion has some really stupid design flaws ie. the ignition being virtually right beind the wiper lever.
