1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.1 V6

Summary:

A cheap reliable vehicle as long as it's cared for

Faults:

The alternator went at 40,000 miles.

Both front power window motors have failed.

The camshaft sensor went bad at 120,000 miles.

The heater core cracked at 126,000 miles.

Through the years, the spoiler has faded and peeled, but the rest of the paint is in good condition.

General Comments:

This vehicle has been very reliable through the years.

It has the original battery from 97 and has always started right up.

The radio had the common volume knob problem since I upgraded my entire system; the Delco wasn't cutting it.

My mother bought the vehicle in 1997 brand new, and it's been a solid mode of transportation ever since.

The antiquated low tech V6 doesn't have much power, but it is smooth and moves the heavy Grand Am easily.

Faults:

Windows roll up really slow, and sometimes are stuck and I can't get it up, even with help.

I need the motor replaced.

Transmission was out when I bought the car, and I had to get a new one.

Right now there is a light on the dash that I have no idea what it is. It's the first light on the right, and it looks like it has an arrow going down pointing to a line. I checked all of the fluids in the car, and didn't see anything that is low. I have no idea what is wrong.

Also the stupid ABS light keeps coming on when I drive on flat pavement!!!

Summary:

I love it!

General Comments:

I love my grand AM. My dad bought and gave it to me and it runs great. Everything works great! It has good pick up and I will drive it any where. I hope mine never has problems like you guys. We bought it off a old couple and they took very good care of it! So maybe that's why it runs good.

Wait a couple months, you will start getting problems with your car. My car's in the shop now cause the block's cracked.

The windows are always dying and it always gets water in the damn thing

I hope you have good luck with your Grand Am. My 2001 has 70,000 miles and the only thing I have done is replace the front brake pads a few weeks ago (the rear linings are still the original). I have never had a single problem with mine. It has the awesome 2.4 litre twin-cam 4 (like yours) which is the best engine that Pontiac ever built. Mine is very fast and will almost stay with my 2007 Mustang in acceleration.

One thing I really recommend: The Grand Am will handle 100% better and will be safer with a set of very good AA-traction rated tires. I put a set of 215:60 Khumos on mine and it makes a LOT of difference.

1997 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cylinder

Summary:

Good on the outside, but too many repairs on the inside

Faults:

Everything that I have read on here is very true about my car. It is my first car and we only paid $2500 for it, and already we have paid more in repairs than the car is worth.

Both my passenger and drivers side windows have gone out twice, my A/C has gone out, we have replaced my brakes numerous times, and my radio volume control also has a mind of its own.

The carpet was worn when we first got the car, and it was barely driven.

My glove box handle just came off the other day, my review mirror has fallen off, my speaker fell off the door, and now my car has a lake in it every time it rains, or just puddles on the floor on both sides of the car when it feels like it.

We have taken it to the dealer many time to try and get the water problem fixed, and no one can figure out what's causing it, so they think it's my windshield and so it's getting resealed soon.

This is a good car, good engine and gets me where I need to go, but is not worth all the constant repairs and money that I have to put into it when I've just started college.
