1995 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP DOHC 3.4 Liter V6

Summary:

Good reliable sports car

Faults:

The only thing I have had go wrong on my Grand Prix is the rear brake caliper bolt broke, and I had buy a new one for 2.00 bucks, and that was still the original bolt that broke, and it broke at 209000 miles, but that's about it.

Other than that, it has had normal maintenance and it gets 22 miles per gallon, which is great for a performance V6 engine that is 13 years old with 218000 miles on it, and the car being a sports car was great in the snow.

My previous Galant had bad top speed, belt went out on it. The thing had a crappy interior. The RPM gauge never worked. The motor had oil leaking out of it, and it was burning it, and this all happened when I bought the car at 100000 miles; for a foreign car it sucked.

General Comments:

The Grand Prix is a fast reliable car.

Best car I have ever owned out of the 2 foreign cars I have owned.

1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 V6 sfi

Summary:

Very cool, but sucks gas like no other

Faults:

The engine over heats.

The car used to hesitate when I took it on the highway, but I took it to the dealer and it took 750 dollars to fix it.

The muffler is all rusty and about ready to fall off.

General Comments:

The car is pretty fast but nothing super special.

The seats are pretty comfy.

And the heating and air conditioning keep the at a nice temperature all year round.

The rear tail light is cracked, resulting is moisture in the trunk.

And the fog lights are a pain in the ass to replace.

I've had my 1995 Grand Prix since '97 and have loved every minute of ownership. Although there has been about $2000 worth of repairs over the past 11 years (O2 sensor, gasket, injectors, o-ring, knock sensor, MAP sensor), overall this car has been very reliable. Just a few spots of rust starting to show and the left side muffler (original) has a hole in it. I would absolutely buy another.

1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1

Summary:

Excellent long running motor and worth the $$$

Faults:

Normal Repairs like fuel pump, alternator, water pump, starter, brakes, power window switch, etc..

Transmission is "just hanging in there" for a long time though!

General Comments:

Totally have gotten my $$$ worth.

Motor runs so smooth at 181,000 miles and 13 years old.

Dependable motor.

Cost of parts is very realistic and fair.

I don't like sitting so low though and the headlight visibility at night is very narrow.

Don't like seats at all though.. too uncomfortable and low with no back support.

I love the lower feeling, and the seats are big and soft headlights are narrow, but it's a fast little 3.1 V6, and will take lots of beating as I learned.

1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 V6

Summary:

Reliable car, fair maintenance costs

Faults:

Review based on having all (!!!) the service records from the previous owner too, for 12 years of running.

Brakes (calipers, rotors) changed at 80K and 120K, brake pads about 4 years at a time.

Alternator changed at 120K, water pump at 80 and 110K, radiator at 160K.

Cover screws from interior door handles usually get loose.

Rear struts changed at 130K.

General Comments:

Buttons tend to brake off, usually can be glued.

No rust or paint damage whatsoever, interior plastic, although seems cheap, holds well. Driver's seat could use a bit more of cushioning. Signaling switch tends to stick sometimes, or fails to release after turn. The more older is the car, the slower is the signaling, observed for other same models too.

Power steering is great, easy maneuvering, holds great in turns.

Acceleration is fair, usually you get better acceleration if you are not flooring the pedal, but rather applying steady pressure. You easily get the extra power when passing, although sometime hesitates to shift.

Still getting about 30-31 mpg on highway, 17-18 mpg in urban traffic.

Maintenance is everything, but try to fix the smaller problems by yourself. (So far I have been at four dealerships, three times they failed to diagnose correctly the problems.)

Spare parts you still can find at junkyards or on line stores, originals are extremely pricey for this model. (Ex: signal switch $54 on line/$114 original, rear lamps $150 on line/$229 original)

Never fails to start (even at -20F winters), w/o engine heater.

Just for anyone with an older GM that has slow signals: On my 92' the side marker bulbs burned out after replacement the signals are about as normal as any newer car.
