Summary:

Amazing, peppy car with great miles per gallon, that can haul anything

Faults:

The clutch needed to be replaced at about 150,000 miles.

There was a window bolt that was part of a recall.

The buttons on the radio started to chip at about 100,000 miles.

Developed a small oil leak at about 190,000 miles.

The leather is started coming off of the shifter at about 215,000 miles (but it is still attached at 226k).

General Comments:

This car is pretty quick.

I used to get 35 MPG combined. Now I am down to about 30 MPG.

I can fit anything in it. Really. With the front seat down, this thing can fit ANYTHING I want to put in it. It has never failed me.

The engine is slowly starting to wind down now. Not dying, just getting tired. It is still faster than the other compact wagons I have been test driving lately.

I have come to the conclusion that I just need to find another one of these in an '03 or '04, and drive that until one of the manufacturers makes a better car. There's nothing out there with this much pep & this great gas mileage combined.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Summary:

Great, except for the clutch

Faults:

Clutch went at around 55000 miles.

General Comments:

This is the sister car to the Toyota Matrix. They both seem to share a problem with the clutch slipping with low mileage. I have driven many standard transmission cars and have never had a clutch go this fast. I replaced it at 55000 miles with a Clutch Master FX200. It's now 8000 miles later and I think it's starting to slip again.

Other than this rather expensive problem, I have had no problems with this car. I see other posts regarding same issues with Toyota Matrix.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

Summary:

Great, reliable, small wagon/car for the money

Faults:

Window channel in the front doors replaced under warranty.

A/C damper switch replaced for $200.

General Comments:

This car extremely reliable.

Gas mileage, 26 to 30 mpg depending on driving conditions.

I service the car regularly, but I also drive the car very hard when on the road.

Not the most comfortable, but works.

Pontiac dealers do not know anything about their own car. I take it to a Toyota dealer. That's sad.

Would buy again, but would get the 2.4 engine.

"Pontiac dealers do not know anything about their own car. I take it to a Toyota dealer. That's sad."

They don't know anything about it because it IS a Toyota. This is why it is so reliable and the mileage is so good on it. You can still buy a new one, even though Pontiac is dead... Just go for the Toyota Matrix, and then you'll have a competent home dealer too as a bonus.

Um, Toyota has built a 2.4 liter engine since 2001. It was used in the Matrix XRS and Vibe GT since 2009.

The same engine was used in the Camry from 2002-2009, and the Highlander from 2001-2007, and the Rav4, from 2004-2009.

To above comment:

Sorry, but the 2.4L engine is made by Toyota, not GM. The Pontiac Vibe is made entirely by Toyota (with the exception of the Pontiac badge). It's just a rebadged Toyota Matrix.

We test drove three Vibes in 2007 before buying something else. One was the GT 6-speed manual, and even it was slower than our I-4 Ford Fusion. It is a cute and useful vehicle, but based on its rather anemic performance and the fact that it is made by Toyota (not a good sign, especially with all the recalls), we opted to stick with something built by a domestic car maker.

"Um, GM also made a 2.4 called the Quad 4."

Yeah, it was a 2.3 Litre!

Where is the Quad 4 now? My original review was to compliment the Pontiac Vibe and tell of my experience with the Pontiac dealer. It kills me that the American car manufacture cannot get things right the first time. I know we are better than that. When the greed factor sets in, the consumer loses. Capitalism will not work without character!!! Perhaps the recent economic "recession" has opened the eyes of the American car manufacturer.

Mr. Ford Fusion... Most of the Fusion is from MAZDA. Ditto on most other "Ford" cars.

The Vibes were made in California, with all the other Toyotas GM re-badged and sold (Nova, Prizm).

Just a courteous FYI...
