1989 Porsche 944 2.7L

Summary:

Beautiful Garbage

Faults:

First things first, I had the checked out by a Porsche mechanic when I was thinking about buying the car. He charged me a hundred and twenty dollars to tell me it needed a timing belt, which I had already figured. He said besides that it's a good car.

Long stories short, I had the car for a year. It spent six of those months at the shop.

I bought it for $3,500.00. I spent just over $4,000.00 keeping it running.

General Comments:

I think the 944 was one of the most beautiful and disappointing cars ever made.

I think I'll stick with Honda.

I'm more inclined to believe that you could have had just the same problem with a Honda that was poorly looked as much as you could with a 944.

I purchased an Integra off a Mechanic who owned it, and even he couldn't predict all the things that might go wrong with it. Sorry to hear you had a sour experience, but I also know a few 944 owners that swear by their cars.

1989 Porsche 944 S2 3.0 Litre

Summary:

Love it - best deal on any sports car

Faults:

Had to replace Ball joints all one piece - rather expensive.

Just general maintenance after that!

Sound system a little weak.

General Comments:

Great Car well worth the money, I wouldn't trade it for anything, maybe the cabriolet.

Great handling cars, love to see those Mustangs and Camaros trying to catch me on a winding road - not a chance.

Best performance at 4000rpm and up.

Better than a Boxter.

1989 Porsche 944

Summary:

The best poor man's Porsche

Faults:

I preventively replaced the timing belt.

The water pump cracked, but kept running.

The oil coolant line leaked.

General Comments:

It has the best handling of any car of ridden. In hairpin turns the 944 reluctantly slides, even at high speeds. I've come to trust the ability of the 944's handling.

The engine is a perky little 2.7L 4 cyl. that revs nicely. Once the power-band is reached, somewhere around 4000 RPM, this little car really comes alive. The engine roars and road-line becomes a blur.

The downside of this is comfort. It was never designed to be a comfortable car. The seats are made of tough hard leather. On long trips your rear-end will feel a lot of discomfort. I suggest lots of pit stops along the way.
