1994 SAAB 900 s 2.0

Summary:

Nice, but quirky

Faults:

This is a great driving fun car. The problem is the heater. There is barely enough to defrost the windshield. All the other Saabs I have owned would run you out. My understanding this is a cross-over year, part 93 and part 94. Anyone have any suggestions?

I just bought a 93 900se and the heater seems fine while the air conditioning seems a little weak. You might check the heater core to see if it is clogged or the air passageway is clear.

Good luck and happy motoring.

1994 SAAB 900

Summary:

Hot sexy styling beast!!!

Faults:

Nothing at all!!

General Comments:

Great Machine. It is a dream to drive it. It is my baby.I'm only sixteen, but I know my cars. This was the best convertible made. The top is pretty much down all the time except for when it rains of course. For all you Saab 900 haters out there.. YOU ALL JUST Don't KNOW GOOD CARS WHEN YOU SEE THEM. I plan to purchase another one of the same year. Hoping for a turbo. I will always cherish this vehicle. American cars suck compared to the beauty of this car. Turns heads every where! If you get the chance... buy one!

I don't know about the convertible, but I had a 900 hatchback non-turbo as my first car, and while I loved it and thought that it had decent handling, I didn't feel that the engine was adequate to pull it. (If I had the turbo model, that would have been great!)

1994 SAAB 900 S 2.0 non turbo

Summary:

Not as reliable or as fun as it's previous model. Exception 900SE. Look to 85-93 900 instead

Faults:

Clutch cable broke at 160,000.

Shifter broke at 160,000.

Idler pulleys broke at 165,000.

Terrible to get aligned!

General Comments:

Would not buy this model again. The 94 was the first year of the SAAB GM transition. NG (next generation, due to GM transition and redesign) 900 problems did not get worked out until 1997. Simply not as solid as previous Saab 900's. If considering 900 expect clutch cable to break and if you have an auto trans expect lots of upkeep. If you have your heart set on 900 look @ pre 94 900's. These are much more solid and more well built than the 94-97 NG 900.

Keep in mind the pre-94' 900's have terrible automatic transmissions though...

1994 SAAB 900 Turbo Covert.... 2.0L turbo

Summary:

Great car.. fun to drive

Faults:

Not much other than the normal Saab things.. Top pump leaked.. fixed by Saab.. Brakes all the time...Oil..has to be synt... And ohhh the recalls..

Some rust has shown up in strange places.. under trunk lid? also in the middle of the doors?

General Comments:

Great car//we love it.. Its not our daily driver, but when the sun is out here in Ohio and its time to put the top down..can't think of a better car.. It still looks great 10 years later and still turns peoples heads. It does have some turbo lag.. but over 3000 rpm... let her rip...

1994 SAAB 900 S V6

Faults:

Rear muffler system.

Failed A/c system which required new coolant and charging every summer.

Electrical system problems.

Sticky gearbox during the winter.

Seized engine at 70,000.

General Comments:

This vehicle was the first car I bought after saving for years.

I ended up buying the car all over again with the money invested.

I kept investing because I believed it would be the last problem.

This particular year was said to have many problems.

1994 SAAB 900 900S 2.3 NA

Summary:

Great value, near-luxury car for cheap

Faults:

Valve cover gasket leak - slow weep.

Thermostat housing gasket, heater core hoses and radiator hoses replaced.

Needed upgraded linkage to cure shifting problem (would pop out of reverse, hard shifting)

Upper idler pulley replaced as PM.

Serpentine belt replaced.

General Comments:

This has been my first foray into owning a Saab and I have to say that I'm impressed. I'm a DIYer and have done all of the upgrades and maintenance myself on this car - otherwise, I probably wouldn't be able to afford it. Funny thing is - most people think I spent about 4 times more on this car than I actually did - it has that prestige look to it (which I have to admit was a factor in my purchase)

Parts are slightly more expensive then domestic US, but the build quality is so much better. I've been impressed by how well the car is built - almost on par with my roommate's BMW 325is (he ends up working on it far more than I work on my Saab).

Handles great - with great road feel - almost too sensitive actually. Great thing about these cars is that you can find a decent example for very little money relative to comparable makes and models.

If you end up looking at one of these cars - make sure you check out the suspension for steering drift or vibration at higher speeds (60-70mph), noticeably stiff shifting and occasionally popping out of reverse, head gasket and/or valve cover leaks.

I also like the simplicity of the design - the turbo models have a direct ignition cassette that often goes out and cost about $300 to replace, while my car, being naturally aspirated, doesn't have that problem. Also, stay away from the V6 models of this car - in my opinion every one of them is a complete design failure (you must replace the timing belt every 30k miles otherwise you'll fubar the engine). Not so with the 2.3L inline four - it has a nice little timing chain that should last the life of the car with diligent maintenance.
