1994 Saturn SC 1.9L

Faults:

As with all things, you start having problems as soon as the warranty is up! I've been experiencing computer problems causing a short in the electrical system, draining the new battery and causing engine failure.

General Comments:

Very reliable, but with such high mileage, I have to worry! Great on gas, but I will never get a 4 cylinder vehicle again and it was too much money in 1994.

1994 Saturn SC SC1 2.0L OHC

Summary:

Quick car, good looks, noisy motor

Faults:

At 70,000 miles, it needed a timing chain replacement. Very expensive, and went before it's time. They didn't really have a reason why. Other than that, 100 percent reliable.

General Comments:

Quick, racy motor. Noisy, noisy motor. terrible sound, but it goes like stink! Good handler. Decent mileage (30 on highway)

1994 Saturn SC SC1 1.9 inline 4 cylinder.

Summary:

Take the good with the bad

Faults:

Nothing too bad has gone wrong with this car. Premature wear on the seats is typical of Saturns. The headliner on most pre 1995 Saturns is sagging and mine is as well. Had to replace complete brake system at 73,000 miles due to excessive wear from salt during the winter. It's evident that the car isn't insulated very well due to road noise and constant cabin temperature fluctuations. Odometer failed at 130,000 miles. Was told by the dealer that it's typical of pre-1995 models.

General Comments:

This car is a great first car. Although the cabin might be a bit tight for taller riders, the front seats are comfortable. Harsh lumbar support in the back seats along with very cramped space. Center console in rear seat is very controversial as far as styling/use is concerned. The single over head cam model (single port fuel injected in 1994) has very sluggish acceleration and merging is impossible without turning air conditioner off. This car is extremely reliable though. The air conditioner is extremely cold and runs flawlessly. You can't beat 27 miles per gallon and dent resistant panels. Great first car or grocery getter. I highly recommend-

1994 Saturn SC 1.9 DOHC

Summary:

I couldn't be happier that I purchased this vehicle

Faults:

The alternator went out after I'd had the car for a year (I'd put about 5,000 miles on it).

General Comments:

If you want to replace the alternator yourself, it's relatively inexpensive, but difficult to get to. The passenger's side wheel and splash guard have to be removed to replace the alternator.

This vehicle is by far the best value for my dollar. The miles per gallon are excellent, it's fast for a 1.9L, and other than the alternator I haven't had a single problem. It shifts as smoothly as any car I could and was worth more than twice what I paid for it.

1994 Saturn SC 2 1.9L

Summary:

I spent too much fixing it up!

Faults:

When I first bought the car, the A/C cut out right away. Then, my alternator died 3 months later. I had to replace the clutch cables at 120082 miles. The leather started cracking at 124000 miles. The sunroof has always leaked. The headlights go down, but don't want to come back up. The dome light just fell off at 124000 miles. The lining on the roof of the car had just decided to fall at 125000 miles. The oil leaks non-stop, this thing eats it like no other. My dash now comes off in 7 pieces. I had to replace 2 engine mounts that had broken recently, that was fun. I hate this car! The engine belt tensioner broke at at 117000, which is general maintenance. I have to use my brights for low-beams.

General Comments:

I wouldn't recommend the this year car. I've never been in any other Saturn, but this one was enough for me.

I also own a 1994 Saturn SC2 with the Twin Cam... personally I have been a Saturn fanatic ever since I started owning this car...

I think the main problem with your car was probably the use and the maintenance. Chances are the previous owners of the car ran it hard and never did any maintenance on it. I've noticed some of the same issues with my car, some of the roofing had started to come down in spots and I also had an engine mount go bad... chances are these are normal things with this car. I haven't noticed much else. For a '94 car that is excellent on gas... and with my Dual OverHead Cam the thing can book. I've replaced the EGR Valve and Solenoid on it to get my check engine light off and I too have noticed that the car eats oil, I too have a small leak, and I need to change my oil a little more often than other cars... but with this regular maintenance the things runs great... I wouldn't recommend against this car at all.
