1992 Toyota 4Runner SR-5 2.4 litre 4 cylinder

Summary:

Most reliable car ever

Faults:

I backed it into a cement pole. The only problem in seventeen years!

General Comments:

Best thing that ever happened to me. My dad bought it the year I was born, and now I'm driving it.

1992 Toyota 4Runner 3.0 V6

Summary:

Expensive and not worth it

Faults:

I had to replace the radiator which leaked, the power steering pump failing at 120k, I bought it without A/C but never had it fixed because it would cost over $1500 a head gasket blew and the engine had to be rebuilt $4000 plus to fix. The sliding non powered seat broke and wouldn't roll back. A short in the rear brake light always burning out my new bulbs.

General Comments:

Don't buy the 3.0 v6 it was poorly made and several years after the recalled head gasket it still broke down. I spend thousands on this car and would never buy a 2003 or older 4 runner EVER!!!

1992 Toyota 4Runner SR5 3.0L V6

Summary:

If you've gotta go anywhere, do it in a 4runner!

Faults:

Driver side seat upholstery is splitting open. May be due to my J-Lo type rear end.

Head gaskets need replacing at 278000 km.

Motor on power tailgate window is fading. Might have something to do with the fact that it gets down to minus 30 celsius in Canada.

Had a problem with the engine revving up and down constantly. Turns out my rad hose was loose and leaked antifreeze. Re-filled the coolant and tightened the hose, good as new.

General Comments:

This thing can go anywhere! I've owned a few trucks, a couple SUV's. Nothing like this little baby!

It lacks a bit in power (what do you expect from a 3.0L that weighs more than your average car?). What it lacks in the umph department it certainly makes up for in fuel economy and utility.

I haven't even owned Christine (my 4Runner) for over a year and already I've put more km's on it than most people do in two years simply because it's that much fun to drive. Rush hour traffic? No problem. Jump the curb and bypass the holdup. Can't get to a campsite on foot? Load up the gear and go offroad. I took my friend's boat to the lake a good dozen times last summer (2005) and had no problem on the highway with towing.

The only reason I'm selling it is because I drive so much, having an SUV is not very economical. I get about 400km to a tank (which is between 50 and 60 Litres). Try doing that with a domestic! My friend's '98 Durango can go places I can never take my 4runner, but he pays ridiculous money for fuel.

People talk about how Toyota's are overrated and don't deserve such a good review. They've obviously never owned a decent one or haven't had the time or little bit of money to fix it up. Toyota's (especially 4runner's) are reliable, economical (if you don't drive 500km a week like I do), and they hold their value well. A doctor friend of mine sold his Nissan Pathfinder for $9000 last year. It was a '97. My 4runner is a '92 and I only paid $7000. And that was high seeing as I got it from a mechanic who put a 3 month unlimited warranty on it. What mechanic puts 3 months unlimited warranty on a USED VEHICLE? Obviously one who knows that Toyota's are the best.

My mom had one of these when I was a young fella still living at home. I'm from Saskatchewan. She bought it as a demo with 3,000kms on it. It was a super reliable truck. It could go anywhere. Mud, snow, blizzards, you name it. It could also pull other vehicles back on the road with ease. I myself fixed everything on this truck. The power steering pump, and rear window motor, and other than regular maintenance items that's about it. Rust ate the front fenders and back bumper shroud, but mom had a body shop replace these and repaint the truck for about $1,600. It looked like new again. These things are reliable. The motor and tranny were never opened up. Parts are cheap and everywhere. They use allot of gas. But it's a truck, with a truck frame, so that's to be expected. The air conditioning went on it in early 2006. She put 360,000kms on it. These are good trucks and they are easy to work on. Her's had a V-6 automatic and it was an SR5. She sold it and bought a new (demo) Highlander. She got nearly $6,000 for it when she sold it.
