1991 Toyota 4x4 Pickup 22re

Summary:

This truck may not get you there fast, but it will for sure get you there!

Faults:

I had to replace the starter around 50,000 miles. That is the only time it has not started for me.

I had to replace the transmission at 110,000 miles. I'm not saying that it was the truck's fault for the transmission. I haul some heavy loads of firewood and rocks so I strained it pretty good. Other than that, general maintenance is all that has been needed on this truck I love.

General Comments:

My 1992 Toyota is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Bought it brand new December of 1991 and have had it since. It always starts and even though I have abused it with a few dents it looks good.

I will have this truck until it dies. Then I will resurrect it from the dead and keep going!

I backed into a tree and ruined the rear bumper so I replaced it with a tubular chrome bumper that has a tow hitch. The chrome bumper I put on is horrible. It started rusting 6 weeks after putting it on. The company, which I will not name, was not nice to deal with and did not want to work with me on getting it fixed.

I added some Super-springs to help with the sway and keep my truck level while loaded. These seem to help a lot especially with towing. By the way, this truck is a 4 cylinder and was probably not made to tow much, but I have managed to tow my Power King tractor on a huge trailer behind it through the mountains and it did very well. Hope the transmission holds in there!

I also put on some Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks. These have helped fine tune what kind of ride I like plus I can adjust it to what I need at the time. Very good performers.

Thank you! One less person looking for a 1991 SR5 V6 4x4. BTW, at 247K miles it has broken down twice! The first time was when the original clutch went out, it was worn to a wafer. The second time was when the fuel relay went out. Oh yeah, it was 3 times! The 3rd time the battery went dead. Dang Toyotas! Do yourself a favor, stay away from Lexus too! Chevy's having a sale!

1991 Toyota 4x4 extra cab 3.0L sr5

Summary:

A pile of scrap metal with wheels

Faults:

My cv boots fell apart shortly after purchase.

Seats are torn up.

The head gasket recently blew out.

This truck leaks an outrageous amount of oil.

General Comments:

This is by far the worst vehicle I have ever purchased. It seems to be a chain reaction of things going wrong.

I will never buy another Toyota as long as I walk this earth.

Hi, UK here!

What truck is it? I've just bought a 98 Hilux crew cab, the best thing I've bought ever! I've never heard a bad thing said about any Toyota truck, I think you've just been really unlucky. I had a Land Rover and that thing just fell apart, so do buy another Toyota, but don't buy British!

Tom.

Inspect your vehicles before you buy.

Another Toyota owner afraid to accept that they wear out.

The cv boot fell apart? A 16 year old piece of rubber that rides underneath a truck? What a surprise. Change them. How many miles are on this truck? What kind of maintenance was ever done to it? You are driving one of the best trucks ever produced, and it takes long years of abuse before they begin to come apart. Buy a new truck next time. How much did you pay for this one? Yeah, Toyota's eventually wear out too; just not nearly as soon as any other make. Fix the head gasket, replace the boots, change all your fluids, grease the fittings, and drive happy.

Accept the fact that Toyotas wear out if you use them. Gets tiresome. They are not any better when they get age on them as I have worked on them.

A Toyota 4x4 pickup does not have CV boots. So I don't know what kind of vehicle you are talking about. It's some kind of front wheel drive.

Just take it to the Toyota dealership and replace everything.

Try going out and looking under the front end of the first 4WD truck you find -- see those big rubber boot things? Did you really think that only FWD cars have CV axles?
