1991 Toyota Camry DX 2.0

Summary:

True Toyota Hallmark: Rugged Reliability

Faults:

Outside of regular service intervals performed since ownership (0-100k):

At 177K fuel leak (inconclusive);

150K the alternator;

130K the radiator, O2 sensor;

60k-100k struts.

General Comments:

Recently, my wife and I donated the vehicle because the cost to replace the fuel tank, fuel pump & sender unit (even though they were intact) & housings, straps, etc. were well beyond our threshold, the value of the car which I estimated to be $1000.

We really hated to get rid of this vehicle, especially me. I paid $250 to Toyota dealer to inspect and basically tell me the cost to repair the gas leak would be $900. As yet, I still don't know what caused fuel to leak vigorously while just idling in park. I did, however, see the tank myself and noticed a 360 degree wet spot where the fuel pump is bolted onto the tank. In hindsight, I should've endured all labor pains myself, repaired and put it up for sale (what we were trying to do just before the fuel leaks). What a bummer...

But, I would purchase another '91 with very low miles in a New York minute. I absolutely enjoyed doing some of the maintenance on this car.

1991 Toyota Camry DX 2.0 DOHC 3SFE

Summary:

Good car, hard and expensive to service

Faults:

The engine has somewhat leaky valve seals.

Automatic transmission is shuddering and takes a long time to lock in when cold.

The differential pan gasket leaked fluid and the differential failed. The differential uses the same type of fluid as the transmission, yet, does not share the same reservoir as the transmission and is very hard to check the fluid level or add fluid. There is a bolt between the transmission and firewall above the suspension cross-member. Differential disintegrated . I am buying a new transmission.

New drive axles were put on due to the CV joint boots cracking and getting damaged, however car was driven 6000 miles with bad CV boots. Left axle has snap ring inside of the transmission, hard to get to. This has happened too many other Camry owners I know.

General Comments:

This car felt snappy and had pretty good handling and a comfortable ride, trunk space is smaller than any other car I've had though, I cannot fit my lawnmower in it.

Seats are OK, would be better with the lumbar support found in the LE model though.

Stereo upgrade route is limited.

1991 Toyota Camry DeLuxe 4 Cylinder

Summary:

You MUST buy this car if you see one!!!

Faults:

-It was missing 3 Windows

-It needed a new battery

-My dad is a dumb ass and broke the engine parts on PURPOSE (he's kinda psycho)

-It had rust around the wheel wells

-It needed a muffler.

General Comments:

-I bought, no wait my dad, bought this car for $425, so I can understand the problems

-It ran BEAUTIFULLY

-It made it from A to B to C to D to E to F, then back to A!!!

-It is true about these cars being reliable, mine had high miles and ran like a champ

-It was loud (Nascar Roar)

-It was great on gas.

OVERALL: This car is CHEAP to maintain, I had to buy a battery, get 1 oil change during my year of ownership. I had no job and I could afford to drive, due to it being so cheap to maintain.

1991 Toyota Camry DX 2.5L V6

Summary:

Reliable, well built car

Faults:

The Valve cover gaskets began leaking at about 90,000 miles, which cost about $350.00 dollars to fix.

Toyota recommends changing the timing belt at approximately 60,000 miles. I changed my timing belt at 100,000 which cost approximately 600.00 dollars.

The starter was replaced at approximately 120,000 miles at a cost of 150.00 dollars.

General Comments:

Overall a well built car. the 2.5 V6 is quick, easily obtaining speeds in excess of 90 mph. It accelerates more quickly than most new cars including Honda Civics, 90's integras, The new Mini Coopers and Chevy Caveliers. The cornering is good for such a heavy car. The ride is a bit bumpy, which I believe might be from more heavy duty suspension for the V6 in the front. The Camry also does very well in snow, better handling than a 4x4 in snow up to 6 inches. The few things that did go wrong with the car were repaired and in the cars current condition the mechanic assured me I would have few if any problems until over 200,000 miles. The car, with the V6, gets about 20mpg city/ 25mpg highway.

I'm looking for a used car for 16 yr old female. There is a 1990 Camry DX w/77k listed in our paper $1,650. Is it worth looking into?
