1992 Toyota Celica GT Convertible 2.2L

Summary:

A fun, inexpensive daily driver

Faults:

Upon the purchase of the car:

- Driver's side axle was damaged due to improperly torqued axle nut.

- All shock absorbers were worn due to the poor quality of the brand of shocks. Previous owner had it replaced just a year before the car was sold.

- A small hole on the side of the plastic back window.

- Weatherstripping is showing its age.

- Coolant flush was never done. Surprisingly it had a new water pump and cam belts.

After a few months of ownership:

- Intake hose replaced due to cracks.

- Clutch was worn at 141000 miles.

- Battery replaced due to poor brand choice by the seller. It was an eight month old battery.

General Comments:

This car can surprisingly handle well, although the understeer can be felt when pushed. A set of lighter wheels and sportier tires may be considerable for improving its performance.

The convertible top operates well for its age and comes off fast. This is the first convertible I have driven and it is sensational!

The motor is pretty well-made. The power is decent and very reliable, but it isn't quick by today's standards. Fuel economy is decent, 30 MPG highway. It does have a sporty grunt through the exhaust and it sounds satisfying with every shift. Unfortunately there are no available mods for the 2.2L platform and the only next step to increasing power would be a 3SGTE engine and powertrain swap.

I really dig the body design of this Celica among all the other Celicas. The visor look of the grill, pop up headlights and sleek body really emphasizes the sportiness in this car. The chassis feels tight even though it is a 24 year old car.

There was so much maintenance that had to be done to the car. Recently it feels much more enjoyable to drive with a new clutch, axle and shock absorbers.

Update for this review: It is still running well and better with new performance all season tires. Changing the fuel filter slightly improved acceleration. Currently running at 157400 miles.

Update from owner: After numerous maintenance and parts replaced such as the radiator and the alternator, this Celica has been a solid daily driver for over a year and I am quite satisfied by its nimble and reliable performance. I would recommend a hatchback version for better cargo capacity and looks.

1992 Toyota Celica GT-S 2.2L 16v 4 cylinder

Summary:

Perfect daily driver with looks and kick, but buy the All-Trac if you want speed

Faults:

Have only owned the car three weeks, these are the things I know are wrong with it:

Valve cover gasket causing a bad oil leak... fixed this on my last Celica so no problem.

Dent in rear right quarter panel. Not the end of the world.

Chip in windshield, could happen to any car.

Crack in air filter hose. Duct tape holding up well until pick up a replacement hose from junker.

General Comments:

There was no question when my first Celica, a 93, was a write off that I would be buying another of the same generation. None at all.

This car can be beaten down and take a beating like no other. Reliability flat out.

Comfortable for me at 5'7", not so much for my boyfriend at 6'4" unfortunately. Bucket seats are supportive and cushioning.

Having owned both automatic and manual transmission cars, they are both reliable transmissions. Both propel the car decently, although the manual is superior due to having two more gears. The ECT button on the automatic is great when you need a little extra from the car.

The engine is quick, but I'd like to dispel the notion that people have that the 5SFE engine is going to be fast. The car is heavy, and the engine is built for economy. You're not going to go like a rocket, but the car is pretty quick considering. My boss compared it to his 2003 Protege 5 and believes the Celica has a bit of an edge on his car, to give you an example.

The body is ahead of its time. I get compliments all the time, though I have recently had it repainted and new rims put on it, that only enhances things. The car is great looking by itself, and the body stands the test of time. Some people don't believe me when I say this car is 17 years old.

All in all, excellent car. I owned my 93 for 9 months and this 92 for three weeks. Both cars have served well, and it says something when the 92 has 70000 more kms and still runs as well as the 93.
