1978 Toyota Hi-lux Longbed 2.0 litre gas

Summary:

Wish I could buy one just like it new

Faults:

I put synthetic oil in it, and it all leaked out at about 15,000 miles. That burnt up the rocker arm. The dealer replaced it with no question.

Needed new clutch and head rebuild at 100,000 miles. Put a timing chain on it even though it did not need it.

Sold it at 170,000 miles, because the window regulators and the AC blower were giving problems. Motor and trans were still strong.

General Comments:

Best money I ever spent on a car.

I pulled a 16 foot inboard outboard boat the whole time I had it.

It had a rough ride until I swapped the bias plys for radials. Put KYB Gas adjust shocks on it, and really improved the ride.

1989 Toyota Hi-lux Base

Summary:

The bargain of the century!

Faults:

The radiator leaks a little bit but other than that, I have had no problems with the truck.

I did have the front rotors replaced, but they were warped when I bought the truck.

General Comments:

It still amazes me that at 214,000 miles, the truck starts even on the coldest mornings.

The paint on the truck has long faded and it's almost an embarrassment to drive, but all in all for the miles, it sure is a darn good truck for $1000 U.S. and I wish I could find another affordable Toyota truck.

Just get in it and drive. It gets about 20 mpg. So far, so good! Wouldn't mind it a bit if it laid down and died tomorrow. I have got my monies worth!
