1986 Toyota MR2 1.6 4aeg

Summary:

An absolute dream to own

Faults:

The car has given me no mechanical trouble in the nine months that I have owned it.

The window seals have leaked since before I acquired the car and are in need of replacement. These are tough to find.

There are very small patches of rust in locations where the paint had been chipped.

The front speakers are original and need replacement.

The air conditioner does not work presently. I have easily acquired the parts needed to convert it to R134 A.

Finding an air filter for this car requires the Internet or a dealer because auto parts stores do not stock it.

General Comments:

This car is absolutely a dream. It is fun to drive as fast or slow as you like. I love the way it holds the road in the corners. It feels like driving a race car, but is totally reliable and cheap to operate.

The car uses very little gas, only holds 3 quarts of oil (I use synthetic), and never breaks. It couldn't be cheaper to operate.

My particular car has had a few modifications. The engine was rebuilt when the previous owner decided to race it in SC-CA races. These are races for street legal cars on a track which are run individually. He also replaced the shocks with good gas shocks. The car also has a high performance ignition and muffler. You cannot tell any of these things just by looking at the car and I don't believe they add very much power either. The car was only raced once.

I drive the car every day. I love the fact that my beater car is so nice and dependable, but I really like the fact that I can drive it hard and it will respond. I drive it hard a lot.

Realize this may be a dollar short & a day late, but there is a place in Burlingame, Ca (just south of SF) called Datsonville. The owner, Honza, is hands-down the best, most honest service technician for older Japanese cars on the planet.

I scour craigslist.org looking for older cars that have mechanical problems, high miles, but no body damage, so I can buy them & take them to Honza. He is amazing! And inexpensive! And honest!

He's on Howard Ave in Burlingame, Ca. Tell him the chick that sells Toyotas sent you!

Summary:

Nice joy ride

Faults:

Parts.

Air conditioner.

Struts.

Speedometer.

General Comments:

There was a 200.00 broken part when I first purchased the vehicle. I do not know what this part was, but it prevented the vehicle from running once it was started.

The A/C was broken when I bought the car.

The struts were in bad shape. The car rattled even when I drove in a straight line. This car also had problems with wheel alignment, because it had been wrecked without repair.

The speedometer did not work either and it was a real pain trying to guess how fast I was driving.

I have owned 3 of these cars and I would say that they are really good buys, but totally over priced. They have awesome power that you just wouldn't believe without driving it yourself. Nice joy ride.

1986 Toyota MR2 1.6L DOHC

Summary:

A great, fun car at a great price

Faults:

The alternator died a week after I bought it. (208,000km)

Clutch slave cylinder two weeks later.

Brake rotors warped (very common for this model year)

Replaced oxygen sensor at ~252,000km.

Head gasket blew at 254,000.

Front shocks/struts are worn out.

General Comments:

The best car I've ever owned. I would definitely buy another, albeit only as a second, 'toy' car. It handles like a rollerskate, rides well for a sports car. The engine offers enough power to cruise at speeds above 150km/h without any fuss or cacophony.

The mid-engine layout allows more leg room than almost any car I've driven, including full-size sedans. (and I'm 6'3") Visibility is excellent, and the build quality is superb.

The only drawbacks to owning it as a daily driver are the small storage areas. I just sold it, and I miss it already.

If you are looking to buy one, avoid cars with rust problems. Better to buy one with a good body and bad mechanicals.
