1991 Toyota MR2 N/A 2.2L I4

Summary:

A very practical, reliable exotic car!

Faults:

Driver side window switch broken.

General Comments:

This car is simply amazing! It is the perfect car for me. I love Toyotas as they are dead reliable. My other car is a Lexus LS400 and it has 200+k miles.

When I bought the car, my first question was "do I fit"? I am 6'7". The answer is... yes! With room to spare.

The next question was "Is it fun to drive?" The answer is ABSOLUTELY! I got in and turned the key and it sounded a little more raspy than your typical Toyota 4 cylinder. I put it into 1st (it's a manual) and let out the clutch. I was rewarded with quite a strong push from the 2.2Liter. This is not a fast car, but it is a quick car. This car sounds like a baby Ferrari F355 while going through the gears. The sound and feel are astounding!

Top speed is about 120-130mph (only did that once. I don't dog my cars but rather enjoy the machine as a whole). Getting to highway speeds is super fun.

One downside is that at 70mph the engine turns 3200-3400rpm. This is a bit high in my opinion but it still manages 30mpg!

Frankly, this is a poor man's exotic. The normally aspirated car won't win many races (0-60 in 8-8.5 sec), but it will keep you awake at night thinking about it. You will find reasons to drive it, and you will catch yourself just staring at it for long stretches at a time.

If you have to have the Alpha Toyota, get the MR2 Turbo or Supra Turbo (major $$$$).

Otherwise, get yourself a regular MR2 and let folks mistake you for a Ferrari owner.

1991 Toyota MR2 2.2L

Summary:

An exotic car for normal people on a budget

Faults:

It goes through rear tires like crazy!! The outside looks great, but a closer look on the inside of the treads show heavy wear in a little as 25000 kms. This is just the cost of excellent and aggressive handling. If you want to play you have to pay! Otherwise this car has been rock solid.

General Comments:

Handles like a dream, mid-engine is the only way to go. Very reliable engine and tranny. I get positive comments on it's looks all the time. The only criticism I have is with the t-roofs. They tend to rattle and sqweek a lot going over bumps. I try to drive with them removed as often as possible just so I don't have to listen to the noise.

1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Fast, handles good, and dead reliable. What more could you want?

Faults:

Nothing. Absolutely great quality. The only thing I changed was the valve cover gasket because I took off the valve cover to paint it so I replaced the gasket while I was at it.

General Comments:

I have had 6 cars and this one is definitely my favorite. The only reason I don't have it is because it was rear-ended after I had it for only 8 months. During this time however the car was amazing. I bought it all original and put on a boost controller. The car was capable of beating many new high performance cars just by turning up the boost. Mustang GT's, Honda's with swaps, Wrx's and more. I did dyno runs with the car, drove to the track and made a few passes, and drove home without problem. I would absolutely recommend this car to anyone and am currently searching for another one myself.

1991 Toyota MR2 2.2 non-turbo

Summary:

Ferrari styling, very reliable, fast and fun

Faults:

Nothing. I have replaced the battery, put new tires on it, and changed the oil regularly. Nothing ever goes wrong with this car!

General Comments:

This car was 6 years old when I bought it. I have driven it every day for over 5 years now, and nothing has ever gone wrong with it! Everything on it is the way it came from the factory (except the battery and tires). It still has the original spark plug wires and original belts.

It is amazing the response I get from this car. Every couple of weeks or so, I will be walking to my car in a parking lot and find people standing by my car pointing at it and talking. Seriously! When I go through drive-thru's, they ask me "what kind of car is that?" Everyone assumes it is some kind of exotic sports car.

I only paid $5500 for this car with 45000 miles on it and have only put one battery ($50) and one set of tires ($300) on it since then. I am thinking of doing a tuneup on it just out of guilt, but it runs like new with the original stuff on it. Even the engine still looks new.

I have test-driven other cars over the years, but can't find one that handles anywhere near as well as mine.

It also has a great "vrooom" sound to it that makes people turn their heads.

MR2s are great little cars, and sporty as heck. I enjoyed your comments!

I just purchased a 1991 Toyota MR2 Non turbo two months ago. I love this car! It is pretty fast, and has great handling. The weight distribution factor I had to get used to. But after I really got the feel for the car, it really rocks! It's great up in the hills. So far I have replaced two front tires with Dunlop High performance sport radial 215/40ZR 17. Also I replaced the catalytic converter, and also installed a muffler for a Flowmaster 2 chamber muffler. It is pretty loud, and no one around has one that sounds like mine. Also put in a new Bosch O2 sensor, and a few other maintenance things. The short throw shifter is pretty cool. For anyone looking to buy a Toyota MR 2, I suggest you go for it immediately; you will never drive a car like it.
