1996 Toyota Paseo 1.5L

Summary:

Trooper of a car

Faults:

180,000 miles - rear shocks changed (rear right shock retainer grommet wore out).

200,000 miles - thermostat changed & oil pan gasket (sealant paste) redone.

Small electrical fixes here and there (bulbs, fuses etc.)

General Comments:

From a reliability and affordability of upkeep, this car is absolutely superb. I put over 85k miles on the car in 1.5 years with no major maintenance work needed. It had a lot of miles to begin with, but never once did the car leave me stranded anywhere or hesitated to start. I never felt "unsure" about taking it on long trips. It was my daily driver for a 180 mile round trip commute and I was never late to work (because of the car anyways :) )

It definitely isn't a performance car by any means, but it's still fun to drive in its own way. I consider the fuel economy very good: 34-35 MPG on the highway at an average of 70-75 mph.

Everything was blissful until I rear ended a Jeep Compass several months ago and the front end was badly injured. The poor little fellow would still run.

This car is the reason why I developed an affinity for Toyotas.

1996 Toyota Paseo Coupe 1.8

Summary:

Reliable with style

Faults:

Not much has gone wrong in the last 4 years, except normal wear and tear parts, i.e. brakes, struts & shocks, tune-up parts.

The 2 ignition coils went bad, and I replaced them with after market; big mistake!! went back to Toyota coils.

Needs a new catalytic converter; no problem.

General Comments:

Car is very reliable! A good chic car! Small, but comfortable.

Somewhat noisy on the highway, because the engine revs high.

Holds the road well with G009 Bridgestone performance tires.

Hope to keep the car for a long time.

1996 Toyota Paseo 1.5 inline 4 heavy duty engine

Summary:

My first Toyota, and I love what you do for me Toyota

Faults:

Gauge light went out just on one side (RPM gauge light).

It burns oil, 4 quarts every 3000 miles, which means I don't have to do an oil change LOL.

General Comments:

I bought this car for $1900 like 2 months ago, and this car is saving me tons of money on gas. Ever since I installed Turbomag fuel saver, I am getting over 40mpg, but recently I noticed burning oil, and it seems like my MPG is dropping a bit, but still getting 40mpg, which is awesome.

I love the car, which was my first Toyota. I thought Toyota cars were for ladies, but I really do like it.

In my state the gas price was close to $4 a gallon, and my Infiniti was robbing me, but my Paseo is saving me tons of cash.

1996 Toyota Paseo 1.5

Summary:

Well worth the purchase

Faults:

Check engine light. Replaced oxygen sensor near the exhaust manifold myself. Car has 2 oxygen sensors.

Hard starting if not driven for 5 or more days. Replaced fuel filter, and that helped.

The revving of the engine at high speeds is a little annoying, and the ride is a little stiff, even though we replaced the shocks and struts, and have BF Goodrich touring tires on the front.

General Comments:

The acceleration is very good for a car that has only a 1.5 l engine and automatic transmission. The car corners very well.

Car is very reliable and economical. Easy to replace spark plugs and wires. My mechanic said that replacing the timing belt and water pump was a breeze. Even with 146 K miles on the odometer, we would not hesitate to take it on a long road trip. Overall, we get 36 mpg on daily commutes, and over 40 mpg on highway trips. We are the 4th owner of this car, and plan to keep it well over 200 k.

1996 Toyota Paseo 1.5 I4

Summary:

Fun car, although it is slow

Faults:

The antenna was broken and needed replaced.

Seat was slightly ripped and worn when purchased.

Passenger side front speaker does not work.

The car eats oil almost faster than gas.

Very minor problems though.

General Comments:

I have only had the car for a little over a month and it is a great car for a first car. I love to drive it. the engine is small and struggled to make 95 mph, but the handling makes up for lack of speed. I like having a car that is this rare, plus mine is teal and I have not seen any others that color. the gas mileage is great and rarely have to visit the pump. the back seat is very small, but I never have to sit back there so what do I care?

I have decided that since paseos are so uncommon, and jeep and motorcycles have a wave wen they pass each other on the road, there should be a paseo wave. so if you see a fellow paseo owner wave at them next time.
