1979 Toyota Pickup 20R

Summary:

Excellent cheap vehicle that is easy to work on

General Comments:

I bought a 1978 Toyota camper model with 4-speed manual, dually wheels, and a 20R engine with carburator from my brother who got it from his neighbor who was the second owner.

My brother chopped down the camper into a box truck for use as a utility truck for himself so it looks kinda funny.

As stated elsewhere, it is hard to steer during low speeds. Just so you know, is a small boned female and I do fine.

It does need to be warmed up real good in the cool and runs hard during high heat.

It also is very noisy as it is not insulated, especially in the camper part.

Someone else stated that they are surprised about the drum brakes but mine are also drum all around, too.

I do not push it too much, but I do use it for daily driving to and from work every day and love the reliability of it. I get excellent gas mileage.

My only complaint so far is the clutch slave cylinder that comes from the parts store did not have a long enough rod for the clutch pedal and now I have trouble shifting when cold.

77 Toyota pick up runs great, gas miles is OK. Over all 19 mpg. Only has 457,500 miles. Bought new. A/C just went out.

1979 Toyota Pickup 4x4 shortbed pickup 2.2L 20R

Summary:

Very Reliable and Very Strong

Faults:

Power steering pump leaked, but was easily fixed.

Second gear went out in my first transmission (it had 400,000 miles on it!)

Starter

I also replaced the carburetor with a weber downdraft. It was the best thing I ever did.

General Comments:

This truck can take anything you can throw at it. In all honesty, this truck is one of the most reliable I have ever encountered. Ever.

The prior comment pretty well says it all.

Thanks, Coffeemartian.
