1988 Toyota Supra Turbo 3.0 turbo In-line 6

Summary:

Supras in general, are loads of fun for the dollar

Faults:

At about 190000 miles I had to replace the exhaust.

At about the same time I did a 4 wheel brake job, and replaced the rotors since the originals were getting thin (from previous re-surfacing).

At 206000 the dreaded BHG (blown head gasket) symptoms started showing, and I ended up replacing the engine with a used/low-mile Japanese replacement.

The sport roof (targa top) has always leaked to an extent or another, but I learned to live with it.

There is a little bit of rust on the roof at the windshield line.

And now, my ECU decided to go sideways. The car works great, but the ECU no longer outputs diagnostic codes, so it will be impossible to smog the car without replacing it. The dealer wants $1400, and some places on line want 200-300 to repair the existing one.

I like the car, and if it wasn't for the fact that I'm getting tired of driving stick in commute traffic, I would consider fixing it, but as it stands, I may look for something else.

General Comments:

The car is fast indeed and will give any would be "rocketeer" a run for their money. The Turbo is very smooth and gives the car a definite push when you press the gas.

Where the car really shines though, is the handling. It takes turns flat as a pancake. Even whe the TEMS (Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension) is set for "normal" soft ride, the TEMS kicks in and stiffens up the ride in turns or heavy breaking.

I once saw a review of this car in Motor trend right next to a review of the Porche 928, and the final paragraph red: "If you like performance and comfort, buy this car instead of the Porche 928 and save yourself $50000."

If I could find another, with AT for a bargain in great shape I'd buy it.

I love mine. It is still running great except for a little clutch leak, but that's not a big problem.

The one thing I found wrong with this car is that it tends to burn through tires quick, but that's all my drifting for you.

1988 Toyota Supra Non-Turbo 3.0L

Summary:

I will never part with this car!

Faults:

The electrical windows stopped working.

The rear lights kept shorting out.

Had to replace the battery cable.

Interior is worn.

General Comments:

I absolutely love this car, and will never part with it.

My only sorrow right now is that I have to drive it to work, I want to park it and to start restoring it to its former glory.

The biggest surprise I have had when it comes to drive-ability, is that the car actually handles great in snow!!!

On dry asphalt, which it is made for, it is an absolute dream ride. The seats adjust to cushion you in, and the engines response is substantial.

Like the Camaro I once owned, the drive train is built for speed, it sucks the car down to the surface during curves, and has amazing road feel.

I have no complaints about this car whatsoever. It has been a reliable friend for 5 years now, despite its high miles. The few minor issues it has had, is something you can expect for a car this old.

1988 Toyota Supra non-Turbo, sport roof 3.0L inline 6

Summary:

Most fun to be had for the money

Faults:

Original seat belt hangers flimsy and broke early; replacements much better.

Rear tranny seal leaked at 70K miles.

Clutch master cylinder blew at 100K miles.

Passenger brake caliper froze at 118K miles.

Exhaust replaced for first time at 90K miles.

General Comments:

When new, this car had more amenities than anything else in it's price range.

A bit slow off the line, but it's really a touring car and over 100mph competes with anything.

Difficult to get in/out for tall drivers.
