1996 Toyota Tacoma SR5 2.7 I-4

Summary:

A high expense, nice pickup

Faults:

The truck itself it quite dependable under most conditions.

One morning on a long trip, the check engine light came on and it turns out that the head gasket blew which cost me 1500 dollars.

There is a terrible squeaking noise in the front end from the struts.

The rear wheel locks up under very light braking pressure causing a safety hazard.

General Comments:

The truck has a surprising amount of power and torque for a four cylinder. Other than the things that have gone wrong with it I love the truck.

1996 Toyota Tacoma LX V6

Summary:

Old Reliable

Faults:

Head Gasket recall at 55000 miles. Replaced with a free loaner car. Front wheel bearing dried out (lots of off roading). Repacked and on my way.

General Comments:

This truck has yet to fail me. I bought it 2 years old and saved a fortune over new. It has held it's value very good.

The legroom (excab) is awesome. I can set it so far back that I cannot touch the pedals (I'm 5'11").

A little scary on the highway above 70MPH or in windy conditions. It is 4x4 for not made for Highway travel.

The ground clearance is about 12", so deep water is no problem. I have yet to get it stuck.

1996 Toyota Tacoma SX 2.7

Summary:

I would recommend them to anyone looking for a tough, dependable truck

Faults:

A fan-clutch bearing went out, while driving through Montana during the winter (-20F). I drove it for another 3000 miles before getting into the dealer. They replaced it for free under warranty.

One of the center console hinges broke. Dealer replaced it for free under warranty.

General Comments:

Through 86000 miles, my Tacoma never broke down, or left me stranded in the woods. I changed the oil every 3000 miles, used Plus gas, and followed the manufacturer recommended service intervals and had very few problems.

It was great in the snow and off-road. I was able to average 18MPG in town and up to 25MPG on the highway. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a tough, dependable truck.

1996 Toyota Tacoma LX 2.3

Summary:

Toyota's are the best - would never go back!

Faults:

The Bronco had poor air conditioning. Even after having it checked for leaks & the freon re-charged, the air conditioning never worked up to speed. Otherwise, we had no problems with it.

The Tacoma has been wonderful & problem free. We would buy another one in a minute. If fact, we're trying to talk my niece into getting one.
