1986 Toyota Tercel Regular 1.4

Summary:

Awsome high school vehicle

Faults:

Clutch, Rear Sprayers (which I fixed myself), Piston Ring (1st Cylinder and haven't fixed and still running fine for 10,000), Regular things like tires, belts, oil, etc...

General Comments:

It is a great high schooler car. It was my parents, but now it is kind of mine. It does pretty well off-road, I have taken it on a number of 4x4 trails and am always amazed at where it takes me. I have even jumped it a good 2-3 feet high and 15-20 distance with no noticeable problems!

Cool car. Drive it like you stole it and it will still be your best friend.

1986 Toyota Tercel Liftback 1.5L 12V 4-in-line

Summary:

Crappy car

Faults:

Oil would get into the air filter.

Oil leaks everywhere.

Carb. needed to be rebuilt at 137,000.

Motor died at the end.

General Comments:

Good car if you like Toyota and Japanese cars, bad if you want a car that will past 140,000 miles. our Neon's have had less problems than this Toyota.

What do you expect with that mileage and age, especially being a cheap car to begin with?!

You bought this vehicle at 120,000 miles. Even for a Toyota, that's pretty far along in its life. If the previous owner didn't maintain it well, the motor is going to breakdown, Toyota or not. So don't criticize the car for something that can most likely be attributed to poor maintenance on behalf of the prior owner. And if it's such a case that you knew who owned it before and how they maintained it, then you should mention that in your review to minimize confusion.

1986 Toyota Tercel

Summary:

A masterpiece of reliable engineering

Faults:

Replaced water pump, alternator, starter, struts badly worn.

General Comments:

I loved my '86 Tercel for its unflagging reliability and endurance. If I could buy a new Tercel engineered the way the '86 Hatchback was, I would snap it up in a second. This car just would not quit.

1986 Toyota Tercel 4 Cyl.

Summary:

Very reliable and long lasting

Faults:

Very great car. Replaced Clutch at about 220,000. Would not do it again (Would make a shop do it). Very difficult to get the transmission back in because it was in a very tight fit space. It needs new piston rings. Wheels make a weird noise at about 40 mph. But I just ignore the sound and it drives fine. Seats ripped a little, so I use seat covers.

General Comments:

Would buy another if I had a change.

Very reliable.

Could last a lot longer.

1986 Toyota Tercel Wagon Deluxe 1.5L Gasoline

Summary:

Hard-hauling, tough-loving, gas-conscious space-saving tank of a compact wagon!

Faults:

Right front CV Joint failed @ 195,000 miles. DROVE ON IT FOR ANOTHER 5,000 BEFORE AFFORDING REPLACEMENT.

Gasoline Level sender broke @ 190,000 miles.

Temperature sensor failure @ 200,000 miles.

Driver Side seat coming apart.

Driver Side window regulator broken.

Starter motor starting to go @ 202,000 miles.

Clutch replacement @ 201,500 miles.

General Comments:

This is the most durable vehicle I have ever owned - and believe me, I put it through its paces. I have driven it in rain, sun, snow, mud, gravel, sand, every possible condition - and it keeps on ticking. I am debating with myself right now weather or not I want to get the timing belt replaced and the engine tuned up or possibly the top-end rebuilt... its such a durable car, Id hate to see it die.

I have driven this car for 8,000 miles without an oil change (after it passed to 200k mark) and it kept humming. I have driven this car for 5000 miles on a bad CV shaft and it kept on trucking. I have kicked the car, bumped the car, shifted poorly, hit speed bumps @ 60 miles an hour, in short - done everything I can think of to this car, and it keeps on going.

It is the MOST reliable car I have ever seen. Also, it can haul nearly an entire one-bedroom apartment minus the bed frame in the cargo area with both rear seats folded down. It gets great gas mileage, averaging 300 miles per tank, which only costs me 20 bucks to fill up! If you are a student, if you are poor, or if you are looking for a long-haul, cost-conscious and space-saving little tank, this is the vehicle for you.

There is little that this baby won't handle, and while it may not be the nicest looking or the fastest whip on the street, what it lacks in charisma it makes up for in dollars and sense. I think I will drop the 1000 bucks it needs to get this thing in tip-top shape again!

So where is the car at now??? I have the same model and I am totally torn. My ego I guess says get something a little easier on the eye (not that they are ugly) but logic tells me to keep it and like you were saying, put a little money in it. What did you decide?
