1990 Toyota Tercel EZ Liftback 1.6L 1BBL

Summary:

Fun for about a day

Faults:

The engine blew a gasket and began to leak oil under the hood. All of this oil was shooting onto the starter.

The starter blew out at 111,000 miles due to the oil leak.

The driver side door cable snapped and the door ceases to open.

The exhaust manifold gasket continues to blow out after having it repaired twice.

A strange rattling can be heard when the engine is revving high or when shifting.

The horn is consistently problematic.

No RPM gauge makes shifting confusing at times.

Carpets get wet when it rains.

Windshield leaks.

Windows are hard to roll up.

Defrosters, both front and rear, take at least fifteen minutes to start working.

Dome light keeps burning out.

When the wind blows on the highway, I am sometimes pushed into the neighboring lanes.

Extremely small and uncomfortable.

The clutch blew out at 112,000 miles and it will cost more than the car is worth to get it fixed.

General Comments:

The car is very reliable, but it requires constant maintenance.

It is a fun car to drive, but not to own.

Too many problems to warranty a purchase.

My rear suspension is shot, rear end floats around.

Engine misses throughout RPM range.

Check your choke, if your car runs poorly when cold. My 1985 Corolla had a similar problem. Once it would run on 500 RPM, the next time, 2400 RPM. It turns out I had grease on the choke. Cleaned it, and never had a problem since.

1990 Toyota Tercel 1.3L

Summary:

A Cheap Reliable Unsafe Car

Faults:

Radiator went bad only because it had been sitting for so long.

General Comments:

This has been a great car!

I bought it when I was 15 for $100 and it didn't run. I got it home and replaced the battery and is started up perfectly! It had even been sitting in he previous owner's front yard for nearly 3 years!

I had some fun with it because I knew that I never would put it on the road because I am 6 foot 2 and I don't fit well.

I tore off all of the non-essential items, so the only things left on the outside of the vehicle are tires and the hood. (along with the doors and rear quarters) I gutted the inside so there are only parts of the heater, steering wheel, seats and other small parts I couldn't remove. Because it wouldn't be useful as a car, my Dad and I sawed off the back and turned it into a truck. Boy, the metal on that car is so thin, I would never want to be driving in one of those small Japanese cars ever! There is nowhere on that vehicle where the exterior metal is 5mm wide!

I drive it very often around the yard and to use for hauling wood and it still runs great! I haven't had to replace anything else since I got it.

It is amazing that it is still running even though I have put so much stress on it!

1990 Toyota Tercel Hatchback 1.5 - 12 valves

Summary:

A trouble magnet

Faults:

Radiator changed due to major rust.

Mechanical fuel pump changed due to a leak of oil.

Exhaust seal at front keeps blowing out and causes air filter to clog.

Front calipers stopped working after a year of storage.

Emergency brake cable snapped.

Water pump leaks prestone.

Oil pan gasket leaks oil.

Rear transmission support tore apart.

A 'LOT' of rust on fenders and under-body.

Carburetor is simply stupidly built and consumes a lot of fuel (275-300 Km a tank).

Many more things...

General Comments:

First I got this car from my aunt. It was in really bad shape and I spent my summer restoring it. Even though I keep having problems with this little piece of @$#@. Especially with the carburetor that can't be cleaned without a complete overhaul. That's right, you can't shoot some carburetor cleaner in this one because it will jam the variable venturi. This is the main problem with this car right now. Toyota made this car SO cheap, never you will see me buy one of theirs again.
