Summary:

Great little truck!

Faults:

Timing chain went out at 98,000 miles.

General Comments:

Timing chain blow-up was my fault, I should have gone ahead and replaced it as soon as I purchased the truck.

If I keep it that long, I expect to easily get over 200,000 miles out of it.

Truck handles better and likes it when you have a load.

For such an old truck, the SR-5 model has all the extras you want: power windows and door locks, cruise control, power rear view mirrors, AC, etc.

I'm 6-3 1/2 and there's plenty of room in the cab.

I would prefer the 5-speed for a little better mileage.

I owned a 1989 SR5 bought new in August 1989. I drove it for 140,000 miles before a flood took it's life. The SR5 was the top of the line then. There were no Limited's. Mine also had power windows, power door locks, power side mirrors and all cloth adjustable bucket seats. I got the V6 and with a manual transmission it was like a race car. $13,500 out the door. I totaled it 9 years later and got $6,500 cash. That was the best bang for the buck! I own a 2001 Tundra now with 95,000 miles. Just replaced my timing belt so I'm good for another 90,000 miles. Watch out for the high water!

Summary:

Best small truck ever

Faults:

Very few things have gone wrong with this great truck.

Had to replace the timing chain at 145000.

Front brake pads and clutch went out at around 170000.

General Comments:

This has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It gets an average of 24 mpg and have had it as high as 30 on a slow highway trip. I use it to run my mowing business and always have a load in the bed. In 177000 miles the engine or transmission have been flawless. The 22R still refuses to use any oil between 3K changes and is probably the most reliable and bulletproof motor ever built. If I could change a few things I would like A/C, a 5 speed instead of a 4 and maybe a little more power. Other than those few nitpicky wishes, my little truck gets me up the ski hill in the winter and tows my mowing equipment in the summer. Plus it is super cheap to run.
