1987 Volkswagen Fox GL Wagon 1.8

Summary:

A fifth gear and tighter ratios would make this car very near perfect

Faults:

Vacuum lines. They're old as dirt and becoming brittle. Replace them at your first convenience.

External fuel pump.

Rear wiper failed.

Front suspension. Again, 35 years old. Those bushings are TIRED.

FUEL SENDING UNIT IS UNOBTAINIUM!

Speedometer cable failed.

Everything that could be fixed was fixed for pennies.

General Comments:

First, I would like to confirm my bias. My granny purchased a burgundy on tan and brown 2 door sedan in 1989. She hung up her license in 2009 after being involved in a collision. She only put 19000 miles on the car. Obviously I couldn't let her junk it so I took it. I put 30k on that car over the next decade. Fantastic little commuter.

When the driver's seat fell through the floor I decided it was time to retire the car.

The fates were on my side. I found, just waiting for me in Sioux Falls a nearly identical burgundy on tan and brown 2 door WAGON! Coolest thing I've ever seen! All the practicality of a wagon with the uselessness of a coupe. It's the reverse mullet of cars!

Fun fact: Foxes were the cheapest German car one could buy new in the states at the time. They were either someone's first car, or their last. You find a Fox (at least until a few years ago) it either had 150,000 miles on it, or 50,000. There rarely is a middle ground. I found the latter.

Now, the fuel system bus are hard to find and pricey. The rest of the car is dirt cheap to own.

They don't make em like this anymore, folks. Get one if you can.

German brand, but they were actually made in Brazil.

1987 Volkswagen Fox base 2 door 1.8 8v gasoline

Summary:

Fun car, don't take one too worn

Faults:

Timing belt.

Gas pump went useless so I scrapped the car.

Driver seat worn badly.

General Comments:

I bought the car knowing it was beaten, but it was cheap and at the time I though it looked cool (not a good idea). It ran for about 1000 km with me, but didn't want to repair some expensive things on a '97 car.

It handles well, accelerate briskly without being really fast, it is a fun ride to cruise. The transmission on this model had only 4 speed, witch was a little arrogant on highway because of the engine sound for revving a little high. The car came without any RPM, it would have been useful.

The car was rusted all around, not too much for a 15 years old car.

Fun car to begin with, just be sure to find one in good condition. For that, I would buy another.

1987 Volkswagen Fox 1.8

Summary:

This baby has been good to me for 12 years

Faults:

Radiator has had to be replaced twice.

General Comments:

I acquired my FOX in 1992 when I graduated college. I bought a 1987 2 door FOX from a lady that had taken excellent care of it. She had every service record since the day she drove off the dealer's lot. It had 67,000 miles on it, and now it's almost got 300,000 miles on the original engine and clutch. I have driven this car to Atlanta, Denver, Texas, Maine, and I regularly drive it from Philadelphia to visit my family in southern Virginia. This past winter was brutally cold in Philadelphia, but my FOX fired up every time I started it. Even the air conditioner still blows cold air, and it puts put good heat in the winter time. When I lived in RIchmond, I used to put over 70 miles a day on the car commuting back in forth. I can recall that car stranding me 3 times in the 12 years I have owned it. I will keep it until the doors fall off. I love this little car!
