2001 Volkswagen Golf GLS 2.0

Summary:

In the three years I've owned my Golf, it has been 100% reliable

Faults:

While still under warranty:

The Mass Air Flow went which I think was a recall.

My driver's side heated seat stopped working.

The control for setting cruise control broke.

After warranty:

Check engine light goes on and off all the time.

The washer fluid light stays on although the reservoir is full.

The seats ripped slightly from putting the back seats down.

My front rotors warped after 2.5 years.

General Comments:

I love driving my car, its fun, small and easy to handle.

Although mostly minor things have gone wrong with my car, they are an annoyance nonetheless.

To replace the front rotors and brake pads would cost about 600$ at the dealer. I have been driving with warped rotors for at least a year now. My husband has recently tried to change them himself, but as easy as it is to change them, they are giving him a huge problem.

I love the heated seats. They are a must in cold weather.

I drive 400 miles to visit family many times a year and the Golf has always been reliable.

I have another three years before I will trade in my car for a new one and when that time comes I will miss the Golf dearly. It is really fun to drive even as an automatic.

2001 Volkswagen Golf GL 2.0

Summary:

If you are even thinking of buying this car...RUN!

Faults:

Automatic Transmission failure- VW had to replaced the entire transmission at 64K due to the Large and Small Sun Gear Failing in the vehicle. Also, VW listed a recall on the Mass Air Flow sensor that I have sent for reimbursement for after my failed, but 3 months later have yet to receive my money back. Next, there was an automatic door lock failure that also had to be replaced out. If you thought I was done just wait for the water pump failure because VW places a "plastic" fan in their water pump that is designed to fail. The replacement part of course was made of metal, but you have to buy the entire water pump. The third break light also went out and this is a VW only part that will cost around $150. Would I buy one again? Never.

OK.

Just for the fun of it this is 3 years later and I still own the thing. I am right now at 90000 KM.

Engine light on dashboard would go on once in while. Unexpectedly. Multiple headlight burned out. The passenger door was so misfitted that it bend a bit at the hinge (after warranty of course). Dealer could not do anything (of course).

The lights in the last panel on middle dashboard went off. Had to repair it. Engine still burns oil, every 5000 km I need to add some more. And of course brakes redone even after the premature wear. some plastic parts within the car are actually breaking off.
