2000 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0

Summary:

A very expensive nightmare.

Faults:

Rear Oxygen Sensor

Front Oxygen Sensor

Passenger side window

Fuel Injector

Gar Tank Filler

Cup Holders

Center Console.

General Comments:

I do not recommend buying a Volkswagen unless you have a lot of money to spend on repairs. Volkswagen parts are expensive and not readily available at auto parts stores. I have not had so many problems with any other car I've owned with less than 100K miles on it. It's ridiculous. It seems that the problems I have had are fairly common with the Volkswagen Jetta and it doesn't seem that Volkswagen cares enough about their consumers to do anything about it. They continue to make defective cars purposely so they can make money on the back end for repairs. Most of the repairs that do need to be done have to be done at the dealerships because the on board computer needs to be reset.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0

Summary:

Nice looking, but very costly and not reliable

Faults:

The O2 sensor went at 52,000 miles.

Heater dash lights will not work.

The doors and dash make rattling sounds when driving down the road.

It uses excessive oil.

The brake lights have blown 4 times.

The 6 disc CD changer skips and at times doesn't play at all.

Check engine light is on and off.

The glove box hinge is broken.

The center of the console is peeling right off.

The serpentine belt failed, which caused the water pump to go, and my car overheated and caused valves to bend in, which the motor is now blown. The temperature gauge never rose so I was unaware that the car overheated. It is going to cost over $3.000.00 to fix the motor and the mileage is only 60,000.

General Comments:

When I first bought my Jetta I loved it. The power was fairly good and I love the dashboard lights. On the other hand, I have had the car less than a year and I have put a great deal of money into it. These days it's hard enough to pay your car payment, and if you have costly repairs on top of that, it makes for a very expensive car. I would never buy another VW Jetta.

I own a 2000 Jetta VR6. As I read your comments, I couldn't believe the list of your problems, MANY of which I also encountered . My serpentine belt just went out on New Year's Eve 2004 and I discovered my water pump is shot. I already had the check engine light on for a fuel pump sensor relay. I've replaced various sensor's (some twice) on my Jetta VR6. My glove box has also broken, then I paid too much to have it fixed, and guess what - it's broke again. My tail lights burn out a lot as well. My dashboard lights flickered and totally went out on 12/31/1999, just about 7 weeks after I purchased this "car". As I type, I could go pull invoices and list more problems, but I think one reading this would get the drift on the dependability of my 2000 Jetta VR6. Of course, I'm only speaking about MY car and not all Jetta's out there, but the coincidences I shared with your comment provoked me to write.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6

Summary:

It's the worst decision I ever made on a major purchase

Faults:

The check engine light has come on FIVE times. I have had 2 O2 sensors replaced, my catalytic converter replaced (at 20,000 miles) and have had TWO mass air flow systems replaced.

I've had 5 drink front holders in four years. They've broken and when I've hit a bump, they've spilled all over the air vents, causing them to get sticky and no longer work.

My glove compartment fell off at 48,000 miles because I opened it gently.

I've had to replace my driver's seat because it broke. My passenger seat has also broken.

Yellow goo collects on all four doors.

The cd changer skips cd's or won't play certain cd's.

The armrest latch broke.

The power window regulators broke, but were under recall, so it was free to fix them.

The oil pan design is too low and I've had to have one replaced because it got cracked.

The electronic coolant temperature sensor broke and needed replacing, as did the engine cover.

The front spoiler (underneath) fell off.

The gas lid broke and would not shut.

General Comments:

I will NEVER buy another VW again as long as I live! The thing I regret the most is leasing this piece of junk longer than the warranty period of two years (VW NOW has a four year warranty). We're giving the car back (FINALLY) next month and in order to even give it back, we had to pay $900+ dollars to get things fixed (drink holders, glove compartment etc.) before we can even GIVE THE CAR BACK!

I originally bought the VW Jetta because of VW's excellent reliability, ability to out tons of miles in their cars and good resale value. That must have all been with their older model cars, because everyone I've talked to who owns a 2000-2003 has had a NUMBER of problems with their cars, This includes Beetle, Passat, Golf and Jetta owners.

Thank God I've already purchased a new car, a Honda Accord EXL, which I've heard nothing, but positives about from current and past Honda owners. Having grown up with a Honda, I feel secure in my decision.

I am amazed at the similarity of problems listed in your review compared to the litany of problems I have experienced with my 2000 Jetta 1.8T. You are at least lucky that you can turn the heap in, I am stuck with a paid for heap.
