2015 Volkswagen Jetta Comfortline 1.8 TSI

Summary:

Journalists should be careful how they review this car

Faults:

Where do we begin?

I just bought this vehicle a month ago after my Accord was turned in off of lease, and I wanted to try one of these because of the price, and because to be honest, it is almost as big as my Accord was.

I took it from the dealer with 8km on it, and I stopped at the first light leaving the dealer, and the check engine light came on. I returned to the dealer, and they brought it into the garage and diagnosed it as an evap hose, which was re-clamped and I was on my way.

When the odometer hit 655km, the engine light came on, and there was shaking and sputtering, so I pulled off the road, put it in park and shut it off. I made a phone call to my dealer, and the service guy tells me to restart, which I did, and it was fine, and no engine light.

900km, the engine light came back, same problem. Did the shut off and restart, went away, dealer naturally can't reproduce it.

At 1300km, on a cold morning, I was pulling out of my driveway, and the front windshield cracked from one side to the other. Not following anyone, no chips yet (never even been on a highway) and I am reading that other Jetta owners are experiencing the same thing.

1700 km now, and the car is at VW, trying to get this engine light sputter thing to go away, and I have a loaner (a base model) with you guessed it, a cracked windshield. Volks does not want to admit it, and will not replace it, so I will have to get it replaced with my insurance.

Thankfully it's a lease, and something tells me it will be see ya later alligator when the lease is over. I am hoping VW will give me a new one, seeing how I never made it 5 minutes off the lot without having an issue.

General Comments:

I like the looks of it, and the simplicity of it, with the exception of the terrible navigation system in it.

Handles nice, decent steering, and engine feels nice, when running on all 4 cylinders that is. I heard the earlier years were just average on this car, but I bought the new one, and after reading a few reviews from magazines, I thought I would try one. I am hoping that the issues get fixed so that I can have a hassle free remainder of the lease, or VW gives me another one.

Not too happy.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

The VW Jetta is a great compact car, and offers a lot of bang for your buck in the car market. And VW has made it cheaper and larger to make it competitive with the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic. But VW's goal of 800,000 sold in North America by 2018 has really pushed the assembly line where it's built in Puebla Mexico to its limit... so it will have a few bugs to get out before they can get to their goal.

Also, please read your Consumer Reports Annual Auto issue before you buy any car/truck/SUV out there. It would have told you that the VW Jetta is improving in reliability, but still has a ways to go before it can be considered a very reliable car. Hopefully you have a good warranty on it... and will get all the bugs out of it...
